Our Verdict

The East Oak Smokeless delivers impressively high heat output. During testing, we found this pit exceeded the temperature ratings of most fire pits from several feet away. While its radiant heat could be improved, its overall heat output makes it an excellent choice for groups and colder climates. It also burns cleanly, producing minimal smoke, and the included ash pan makes quick work of ash disposal. We tested the 21-inch model. It also comes in 17 and 29-inch sizes.

Our Analysis and Test Results

An alternative to more expensive smokeless fire pits, the East Oak Smokeless boasts high heat output, minimal smoke, and a trouble-free cleaning experience.

Heat Output

Our favorite part about the East Oak is its heat output. During our side-by-side tests with various pits, it was clear standing next to the East Oak, it produced a noticeably hotter flame than any other pit of this size.

Our Infrared thermometer confirmed our findings, with readings of up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, often maxing out the thermometer. Our only complaint with the East Oak, like with most other smokeless pits, is the lack of radiant heat. While not as much of a problem up close, standing further away, it lacked the ability to push heat outward.

Smoke Management

Although not completely smokeless, the East Oak does a fine job of removing smoke during peak burn. We never felt like the smoke was overwhelming us to the point of having to shuffle around the fire.

As with most wood-burning pits, once smoldering occurs, higher smoke levels will appear, which is normal for any fire pit, smokeless or not.

Portability

The East Oak weighs 17 lbs, including the base plate and ash pan. It measures 21.3" in diameter and 15" high.

Easily light enough for weekend camping trips, RV use, and tailgating. Its trapezoidal shape doesn't offer many carrying points, but it's light enough that we never worried about losing grip or slipping.

Ease of Cleaning

The included ash pan is removable, with an attached O-ring, for easier removal with a fire poker.

The ash pan is a two-layer design, with smaller particles falling to the bottom layer. This does make ash removal trickier since ash doesn't fall out as easily. Still, it's as simple as removing the pan from the pit and disposing of the ash.

Ease of Assembly

The East Oak requires zero assembly; just drop the ash pan into the pit, and you're ready to roll.
