Our first impression was the premium feel and design. The switches and port covers are noticeably refined, and the overall build quality is a welcome addition to the power station market.
For a 1,024 Wh power station, the DJI punches well above its weight class. It can add up to 11,000 Wh of expansion batteries, which is an outlier for a power station this size. It also features an inverter rated for 2,200 watts and a surge rating of up to 4,400 watts.
We also appreciate the quick charge time. Taking just 59 minutes to reach a full charge. The physical toggle button to switch between standard and fast charging is a thoughtful touch that eliminates the need to swipe through a smartphone app. Additionally, the 1000 V2 can fast charge DJI drones from 10% to 95% in just over 30 minutes.
It also runs remarkably quietly. We pushed this power station near its maximum output for months without the fans ever reaching intolerable levels. Ideal for those working in professional settings, like in a photo studio, at night while camping, or while running a CPAP machine overnight.
Dislikes
Instead of using traditional solar and car socket ports, DJI equipped the 1000 V2 with a proprietary port design. The ports are called “SDC” and require additional adapters to charge via solar power, to power devices with 12V car sockets, or even to charge DJI drones. These adapters are not cheap and quickly make the DJI one of the least value-oriented power stations in its class.
With just two SDC ports, it also limits how you can utilize the DJI. Say you have one SDC port connected to an expansion battery and the other to a solar panel. You lose the ability to run other devices, like a 12V car socket to keep your portable fridge plugged in.
The spacing of the four AC outlets is too small, and for a power station with creatives and photography work in mind, larger plugs, such as battery chargers and power bricks, will have to be prioritized one or two at a time.
Should You Buy the DJI Power Station 1000 V2?
The DJI power station is a solid option for creatives and DJI drone users, but its appeal is fairly niche. With power station prices continually dropping, we think it's a good idea to look elsewhere first. Having to buy adapters for missing outlets like 12V car sockets and solar ports stings, and with a competitive field of mid-sized power stations, there are other options that will excel for off-grid adventures at a more affordable entry point.
What Other Power Stations Should You Consider?
The Jackery 2000 v2 is our favorite power station for extended off-grid camping and power-hungry appliances. While it carries a slightly higher price tag, once you factor in the cost of DJI adapters, these units are priced similarly (when on sale), yet the Jackery has double the battery capacity. We are also big fans of the Anker Solix C1000 Gen 2. It's a highly capable unit that weighs just 25 lbs, making it the ideal solution for off-grid travelers who need to prioritize weight and power output.
