Our Verdict
The Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Pro Insulated is a comfortable, incredibly warm sleeping pad designed for winter camping and backpacking. It has one of the highest insulation values of any pad – Nemo claims it's comfortable down to -40°F, which means it will keep you warm in practically any winter conditions. This sleeping pad is great for setting up a winter basecamp for mountaineering, ski touring, or other cold-weather camping. However, it's not nearly as packable as some other comparably warm inflatable sleeping pads, which makes a difference when every square inch matters.

The Ether Light XR Pro Insulated has an R-value of 7.3, which is an insulation rating tested down to -40°F. As long as you have a warm enough sleeping bag, you can use this pad to sleep out practically anywhere on Earth. It's certainly one of the warmest pads we've ever tested, and it all but guarantees that your sleeping pad won't be the reason you have a cold night out.
It's very easy to inflate, deflate, and pack into the stuff sack, which also doubles as an inflation bag.
The inflation valve is simple and fits securely onto the pump sack, allowing you to fine-tune the inflation level after pumping it to maximum pressure.

Dislikes
Our biggest gripe with the Ether Light XR Pro is the weight and packability. On our home scale, it weighs 19.8 ounces. Now this may sound lightweight – and in the grand scheme of things, it is – but the Ether Light XR Por isn't nearly as lightweight as other pads with similar insulation.
The Ether Light XR Pro also weighs a 1/4 pound more than other comparable sleeping pads. Given the additional weight, we'd love this pad to be more durable. Again, there are lightweight pads that offer similar insulation and are built from more durable materials.
It packs into a 10-by-5-inch cylinder. This isn't terribly large, especially considering the stuff sack is also the inflation bag. But again, it isn't as small as other pads with similar insulation value.

Should You Buy the Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Pro Insulated?
The Ether Light XR Pro Insulated is a great sleeping pad overall. It's very comfortable, incredibly warm, and very easy to set up. Compared to other winter sleeping pads we tested, it simply isn't as lightweight and packable.
What Other Sleeping Pads Should You Consider?
The Nemo Tensor Extreme Conditions Ultralight Insulated costs a bit more than the Ether Light XR Pro Insulated, but it's more packable and sports an even higher insulation value (though most people won't notice the difference between an R-value of 7 or 8). For a lightweight sleeping pad that's still warm enough down to about 15°F, the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT is a perennial favorite among thru-hikers.
