Our Verdict

The Renogy 200W Portable is an all-around solar panel that will fit the needs of most people. 200 watts is enough power to recharge most portable power stations on a sunny day. And the folding design makes it easy to load into your trunk. When it's time to set up your solar charging station at camp, this model sets up quickly and easily, so you can focus on relaxing. In terms of how closely it matches its marketing claims with real-life power output, this is one of the most efficient folding panels we tested. And it's also one of the less expensive panels, making it a doubly great value.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Renogy 200W Portable is an excellent 200-watt solar panel that excels in every category while costing less than most other similarly-sized panels.

Power Efficiency

The Renogy 200W performed very well in our solar charging speed tests. This is one of the most efficient panels overall, so it won't leave you without power if the sun is shining.

It features monocrystalline silicon solar cells that generate power efficiently. On a sunny day in California at 6,500 feet, the Renogy 200W generated 177 watts per hour during our two-hour power efficiency test. This is among the highest watt outputs of any panel, and the highest of all the 200-watt folding models.

Throughout our solar charging testing, the Renogy 200W consistently produced an average of 192 watts, according to the power station it was hooked to.

As you can see from the chart above, the average watt output as reported in snapshots by the Jackery power station differs from the measured watts generated in an hour. This shows why it's important to actually let a panel charge a battery for a period of time. That watt output fluctuates greatly from minute to minute, so calculating the total watt output over many minutes gives a clearer picture of a solar panel's efficiency.

Since wattage is calculated in ideal conditions, and the real world never has ideal conditions, we also calculated measured efficiency for every panel. To get measured efficiency, we compared the actual watts generated in one hour to the claimed watts. In the case of the Renogy 200W, the discrepancy between the actual output of 177 and the claimed output of 200 wasn't very large.

The Renogy 200W has a higher actual efficiency than most other panels we tested. Only a few models outperformed this one in terms of power efficiency.

Using the kickstand legs increases efficiency by angling the panel directly toward the sun and keeping it cooler, which further improves power efficiency.   Credit: Matt Lighthart

Portability

The Renogy 200W strikes a good balance among weight, portability, and usability. This isn't the most portable panel, but we would never hesitate to bring it camping, even with a lot of other gear, unlike some 200-watt panels.

It weighs 14.8 pounds and folds to about two inches thick, so it packs easily in your trunk. It has an integrated handle and stays folded with a magnetic closure.

The handle makes it easy for one person to transport it from your vehicle to the campsite. It also has a zippered pouch that holds the charging cable and any adaptors you might need to attach to your portable power station so you don't lose them.

The Renogy 200W features a straightforward four-fold design, and the folded size is 23.7 by 23.0 inches. While some panels fold and unfold more quickly because they have a bi-fold design, we think the four-panel folding design makes it small enough for one person to carry easily.

Ease of Setup

The Renogy 200W is functional in all the ways that matter, without unnecessary features. It supports multiple-device charging and has kickstand legs to point it at low-angle sunlight.

The Renogy 200W has two USB-A ports, a USB-C port, and a hardwired DC charging output with MC4 connectors. While the panel can simultaneously charge three USB devices directly, we recommend charging a power station and charging your USB devices off of that power station. However, you can charge small tech directly off the panel as well.

It has kickstand legs that enable you to adjust the angle to face directly at the sun throughout the day. The kickstand legs are also stake-compatible, which is helpful for setting up in windy conditions. The legs fold flat against the panel and are secured with snap buttons when not in use.

The Renogy 200W has kickstand legs that look similar to those of other budget-priced folding solar panels. However, this panel's legs are larger and therefore sturdier than those of other folding panels. During testing, we noticed that the wind didn't blow this panel over as often as it did other models. And if you use stakes, this panel is practically guaranteed not to blow over.

Should You Buy the Renogy 200W Portable?

The Renogy 200W Portable is an excellent value for a 200-watt solar panel. It's very efficient at converting sunlight into energy, easy to use, and portable enough for most people. It's also less expensive than most solar panels of this size, and the only panels that cost less perform far worse. This panel is definitely a good option to consider.

What Other Solar Panels Should You Consider?

If you're looking for a panel to attach to the roof of your van, truck, or SUV, consider a fixed panel, such as the JJN Bifacial 200W. Or you could also consider the BougeRV Arch 200W Flexible, which weighs less and mounts with industrial adhesive or double-stick tape but isn't quite as powerful. If you're looking for a more portable option, check out the FlexSolar 100W.
