Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
The Stio Hometown Hooded is one of the warmest and most versatile jackets we've tested. It's built from recycled ripstop nylon with a PFAS-free DWR finish and insulated with 800-fill hydrophobic down. Every one of our testers loved this jacket for its comfort and versatility.
Warmth
The Hometown is a very warm jacket. Its 800-fill down insulation provides excellent heat retention, and the generous fill weight means it's extremely puffy without feeling like too much jacket. The relaxed fit also makes it easy to wear a thick sweater or mid-layer underneath, which adds even more versatility in truly bitter cold.
The baffles are well-constructed throughout, trapping heat effectively without creating cold spots. This jacket is more of a true winter layer than a shoulder-season piece. If temperatures are dropping into the teens or single digits, the Hometown is ready for it.
The torso is slightly longer than average, so it covers more of your body below the waist, prevents any gapping between the hem of your jacket and the waist of your jeans, and keeps you warmer overall. It has a drop hem that protects your lower back when bending forward, and toggle adjustments at the waist hem let you cinch or loosen the fit to dial in your warmth on the go.
The hood is easy to tighten down around your face with a shock-cord adjustment that cinches at the back to keep the wind from blowing it off your head. We were even able to manage the toggle while wearing gloves, too. The Hometown has elasticized knit cuffs at the wrists that block drafts without squeezing your wrists uncomfortably. They stretch enough to push the sleeves up to the elbow for ventilation as well.
Comfort
The Hometown is comfortable to wear all day. The interior is soft and doesn't feel like a technical piece. This feels more like a comfortable cotton hoody than a slippery ultralight jacket. We wear this around the house and out in the world on a daily basis; it's just that comfortable.
The relaxed cut through the torso gives you room to move and layer without it feeling loose and sloppy. The recycled ripstop shell is soft against skin, and the fleece-lined hand pockets add extra coziness. We walk around with our bare hands in our pockets often because it's that comfortable.
The Hometown strikes a balance between technical performance and everyday wearability, making it ideal for most people. Whether you're riding a chairlift, grabbing coffee in town, or working outside around the house, it never feels out of place.
The shoulder fit allows for a full range of arm motion without feeling overly boxy. Even with the added bulk of a midweight puffy, it doesn't restrict movement during active use. The elastic cuffs work equally well over bare wrists or under gloves.
The pocket layout is well thought out. Two zippered hand pockets sit at an ideal height for comfortable strolling and easy access. A zippered external chest pocket is handy for items you reach for often, such as your cell phone. A zippered internal chest pocket keeps valuables or electronics close and warm, and an internal drop-in pocket offers a quick spot to stash your gloves or a hat.
Packability
At 21.3 ounces, the Hometown is “heavy” compared to many ultralight down jackets. But it doesn't feel heavy when you're wearing it, and compared to a winter parka, it's easy-breezy. The added fill weight is what makes it so warm, and that's the tradeoff.
It comes with a stuff sack and packs down to a manageable size, making it easy to stash in your backpack when you go inside for school or work. This isn't the jacket you'd choose to minimize pack weight on a summer backpacking trip, but for ski trips, around town in the winter, or snowy winter walks, it's packable enough.
Weather Resistance
The Hometown holds up well against the elements. Its recycled ripstop shell has a PFAS-free DWR finish that sheds light moisture effectively, and the 800-fill hydrophobic down maintains its loft even if some melted snow does make it through the shell.
In sleet, wet snow, or heavy dampness, the hydrophobic down treatment gives this jacket more water resistance than standard untreated down insulation. This is not a substitute for a waterproof hardshell, but it holds its own better than most down jackets in damp conditions. And it's more than weather-resistant enough for blowing, dry snow.
The shell and baffle design work together to cut the wind effectively. The adjustable hood can be cinched down tightly, adding enough protection when you're walking, and the cold wind picks up.
Should You Buy the Stio Hometown Hooded?
The Stio Hometown Hooded is an excellent choice if you want a one-jacket quiver that provides serious warmth and can be worn everywhere, whether you're running errands around town, driving to work, or taking the dog for a morning walk. It's equally at home on the mountain for winter ski and snowboard trips. It's built with quality materials, features a thoughtful pocket layout, and is extremely comfortable, so you'll want to wear it all day. If you're looking for a true winter down jacket with everyday versatility, this is a great option.
What Other Down Jackets Should You Consider?
If you prioritize packability and low weight over maximum warmth, the REI Co-op Magma 850 Hoodie is a great alternative. It's not quite as warm, but it comes close. If you experience some brutal winter conditions where you live, and need the absolute warmest down jacket, check out the Feathered Friends Helios. It costs a bit more, but the 900+ FP down offers bulletproof protection against sub-zero temps.
