The REI Swiftland T-Shirt is a high-performing running tee for runners ready to tackle sweaty excursions. The microventilated SwiftTex fabric is one of the shirt's standout features, allowing heat to escape and air to circulate exceptionally well. We found ourselves reaching for this shirt when we knew the weather would be warm and the effort would be long.
The lightweight polyester fabric wicks sweat efficiently and dries quickly, helping prevent that heavy, clingy feeling that can develop during humid or high-intensity workouts. It performs well for road and trail runs, hikes, gym workouts, and other day-to-day sweat-focused wear. The lightweight fabric and flatlocked seams layer comfortably under hydration packs without adding unnecessary bulk. The chafe-resistant construction is especially appreciated on longer runs.
The Swiftland's features, like underarm gussets, side vents, flat seams, and reflective accents, make it clear that this shirt was designed by people who actually considered what runners need and then delivered a high-performing product at a reasonable price point.
Dislikes
While highly functional, the fabric of the Swiftland doesn't have the luxurious softness of some of the other running shirts we tested. The fabric shirt dries quickly, which helps reduce odor buildup, but it isn't particularly known for antimicrobial performance. Like many polyester tops, it may start to retain odors after repeated sweaty use.
Although some versions have been associated with sun-protective fabrics, REI does not consistently advertise a certified UPF rating for the Swiftland line. If sun protection is a top priority, you'll want to verify the specific version you're purchasing. Moreover, the Swiftland's fit and appearance prioritize performance over aesthetics. Outside of running, it reads more like “technical workout gear” than an everyday athletic top. While this doesn't exactly change its functional versatility, some runners may consider it when selecting tops to wear while running.
Should You Buy the REI Swiftland T-Shirt?
The Swiftland excels at executing the basics well, but it doesn't offer many standout technologies beyond its microventilated fabric. Compared with more tech-forward shirts featuring advanced odor control, specialized sun protection, or ultralight proprietary materials, it can feel a bit straightforward. Even still, we recommend this running top for runners who want a breezy, high-scoring piece of gear. Notably, this shirt has a roomier fit than expected. While this can improve airflow and comfort, runners who prefer a more streamlined silhouette may consider sizing down.
What Other Running Shirts Should You Consider?
In terms of being similar in function and feel, the Brooks Dash T-shirt is another solid option to consider. Available at about the same price, the Dash is a slightly more contoured option well-suited for runners who want a tapered fit. The Stio Lucent T-shirt is a bit pricier, but offers all of the features a runner could want in their running apparel. Outfitted with odor-blocking technology, UPF, and reflective patches, the Stio Lucent is an award-winning running tee. Runners on a budget should check out the REI Active Pursuits tee. While the Active Pursuits tee doesn't feel as technical to the touch, it is more affordable and slightly more well-featured than the Swiftland.
