Our Verdict

The Oiselle Roga Shorts have earned a bit of cult status in women's running for good reason. They sit in that rare category of gear that feels equally ready for a long run, a track workout, or a full day of living in them without ever needing to be changed. Think of them as the yoga pants of running shorts. At 4.16 ounces, they strike a nice balance between lightweight performance and everyday wearability. The 86% polyester and 14% spandex textile blend gives them a smooth, slightly stretchy feel that moves easily with the body. They come in multiple inseam options (1.75", 4", and 6") and numerical sizing, which is one of the reasons runners love them: you can dial in exactly how much coverage and leg freedom you want.
REASONS TO BUY

Overall Comfort

Comfort is where the Roga Shorts really set themselves apart from many of the more affordably made running shorts on the market. The waistband is one of the Roga's crowning features. It is soft, wide, and incredibly forgiving. The overall vibe feels more like activewear loungewear than traditional running gear, which is exactly why so many runners gravitate toward them for daily training, ourselves included.

One thing to note right away is that they run a bit small, especially compared to more relaxed training shorts. We found that our usual size fit okay, and we will continue to run in them, but may have been more comfortable in one size up. Interestingly, this is the only pair of running shorts we tested this season that offer numerical sizing. Armed with this sizing range and knowledge of their slightly snug fit, we are confident you'll find a size that feels harmonious on your body.

The continuous interior drawstring threaded through the waistband keeps things secure, but it does not tie off; it simply cinches and holds in place. This design choice keeps the waistband smooth and low-profile, but it can feel a bit different if you're used to traditional tie systems. On the run, the Roga shorts feel stable without being restrictive. There's a softness to them that makes them especially appealing for easy miles, recovery runs, and even non-running wear like yoga or walking. The tradeoff is that they don't feel quite as “locked-in” as more performance-focused shorts during faster or more technical efforts.

Pockets

The Roga Shorts keep things relatively simple, but the one pocket they do include is easy to access and quite accommodating.

The rear zippered pocket fits a phone and holds it snugly against the back to prevent bouncing. This pocket sits centered on the back waistband and is accessed through an easy-to-grip zipper. This is one of those rare cases where a single-pocket system actually works well because it's so stable. However, we found that the rigidity of a phone doesn't feel ideal in this location while running. For ultimate comfort, we stashed squishy gels and a car key in the pocket and held our phone in our hydration pack. Ultimately, the spacious rear pocket is available for your use as you see fit. While you don't get the complexity of multi-pocket designs in the Roga, you also don't deal with shifting weight or imbalance, adding to this design's functionality.

Breathability & Moisture Control

The Roga Shorts perform solidly across a wide range of conditions, but their strength isn't extreme specialization; it's consistency.

The polyester-spandex blend allows for good airflow, especially given how soft and slightly relaxed the fabric feels. These shorts don't trap heat excessively, and they handle moderate sweat well without feeling heavy or sticky. Moisture management is dependable rather than exceptional. They won't outperform ultra-light race shorts in peak heat, but they also don't become uncomfortable or clingy during longer efforts. The thickness of the waistband, which creates nearly unparalleled comfort, holds moisture a bit longer than that of shorts with thinner, less luxurious-feeling weaves. The Roga shorts are built for steady, repeatable use rather than high-intensity extremes.

Should You Buy the Oiselle Roga?

The Oiselle Roga shorts are not trying to be the most technical shorts on the market, which is part of their comfort-focused appeal. Instead, they lean fully into comfort, simplicity, and wearability, which is exactly why they've become a favorite among so many runners. They're the shorts you reach for when you want a run that feels easy before it even starts. They are not race-day fast; they are not ultra-engineered. They are simply reliably comfortable in a way that feels almost effortless. While other shorts may offer more pockets and ruggedness, the Roga is the soft, familiar favorite you end up wearing far more often than you expected.

What Other Running Shorts Should You Consider?

If comfort is key, the pajama-softness of the Vuori Halo Performance Short 2.0 is sure to pique your interest. While the Halo short falls short in terms of technical performance, its comfort is otherworldly. If you want a short that runs high on comfort with a more performance-focused edge, REI offers a few great options. The REI Swiftland is a breezy, rugged terrain-ready pick that wicks moisture and offers a similarly placed pocket. The REI Swiftland 2-in-1 is a pocket-laden, heaven-sent type of running short that combines a biker short liner with a breezy overlay for modest coverage and serious performance.
