Our Analysis and Test Results
Overall Comfort
For runners who love the stay-put confidence of biker shorts but crave a little more coverage through the seat and hips, the Swiftland 2-in-1 is an easy sell. We appreciate that the inner liner helps prevent chaffing while still allowing the outer layer to feel breezy.
The fitted liner provides gentle support and minimizes inner-thigh friction, while the outer layer adds modesty and movement without creating excess volume. The result feels secure rather than compressive, which is far more comfortable than shorts that pinch and squeeze in all the wrong places. There's enough stretch to accommodate climbing, descending, and changing stride lengths, yet the shorts never feel restrictive. If traditional split shorts leave you feeling overexposed or if full biker shorts feel like too much commitment, this comfortable middle-ground approach is surprisingly appealing. The 2-in-1 shorts are especially well-suited to long runs, trail outings, and days when comfort and confidence matter just as much as speed.
Pockets
This is, without question, one of the Swiftland 2-in-1's greatest strengths.
In total, the shorts offer five thoughtfully designed pockets: a vertical phone pocket built into each liner leg, two stash pockets tucked into the rear waistband, and one large zippered pocket across the back. With all this comfortable, bounce-free storage, we found we could leave our hydration packs at home. Especially comfortable are the bilateral phone pockets. Whether you're carrying a phone, nutrition, or other essentials, the weight stays close to the body and feels remarkably stable while running. We have tested many shorts with phone pockets, but very few deliver such a bounce-free ride. The waistband stash pockets are ideal for gels, lip balm, or a key, while the generously sized rear zippered pocket provides extra security for valuables. Altogether, it's the kind of storage setup that makes you reconsider whether you really need a running belt at all.
Breathability & Moisture Control
Two layers usually raise a red flag for heat retention. Surprisingly, that's not the case with the Swiftland 2-in-1.
Despite combining an outer short with an inner biker-style liner, the Swiftland 2-in-1 dried in our clothesline test in an astonishing 22 minutes, matching the drying time of some single-layer competitors. The 22-minute line-dry time is, in fact, half of the time that it took some of the competitor's running shorts to dry. The recycled nylon-spandex fabric simply doesn't seem interested in holding onto moisture. Sweat moves through the fabric efficiently, and neither layer develops that damp, heavy feeling that can plague double-layer designs. Even after hard efforts, the shorts remain comfortable rather than swampy. Are they quite as airy as the standard Swiftland? Almost. But for a 2-in-1 design, their moisture management is genuinely impressive.
Should You Buy the REI Swiftland Shorts?
The Swiftland 2-in-1 feels like it was designed after we earnestly whispered into the cosmos, “I wish biker shorts had more coverage,” and “I wish traditional running shorts had better pockets.” The result of our hopeful pining is an exceptionally practical hybrid. You get the security and anti-chafe benefits of a fitted liner, the modesty of a traditional outer short, and enough storage to tackle long runs without stuffing things into your sports bra or tying your car key to your shoe. If the original Swiftland is the understated workhorse of the REI lineup, the Swiftland 2-in-1 is its perpetually prepared sibling, the one who always has snacks, a fully charged phone, and exactly what you forgot to bring. And honestly, sometimes that's exactly the running partner you want.
What Other Running Shorts Should You Consider?
The REI Swiftland delivers the same breathability and rugged function as the 2-in-1 version. While the original version isn't as riddled with pockets, it still offers ample storage and is often available for a few bucks less. If you are ready to commit fully to a biker short style running short, the Janji Pace is about as trail and road-ready as you can get. With snug, bounce-free pockets and solid moisture-wicking, the Pace rivals the 2-in-1's performance.
