Our Analysis and Test Results
The Teva Mush II was worn for dozens of hours in a variety of climates throughout our testing process, going for hikes, boat rides, and social hangs. Our testing team unanimously agreed this model defines what a budget pair of flip flops should be: inexpensive, comfy, and good-enough versatility.
Comfort
When examining the comfort of the Teva Mush II, the first thing that stood out was the molding time. While some of the competition took the better part of a week, or longer, these conformed to our feet within a couple of days of wearing them. This made them very comfortable and helped them score well in the lineup.
If you've got sensitive skin, you'll love the footbeds of the Mush II, with a soft and supple texture that paired well with the equally soft polyester toe straps.
During our first session wearing these, we were nervous about the lack of arch support, but with the fast break-in period, we found a modest but adequate arch profile that worked well for a variety of feet. As mentioned previously, the toe straps were a bit tight after unboxing, but they thankfully stretched to fit just right so that foot security wasn't compromised. These are an all-around soft flip flop construction, so if that works for you and your feet, keep these on your finals list.
Support
Support was an essential part of the Mush II testing process. After wearing these on hikes with weighted backpacks and traveling through more adventurous terrain, we found the Mush II to come in average in the lineup.
As we shared in the comfort metric, the Mush II is a soft-construction flip flip, from the topsole to the outsole. This made for a quick-molding option, but we wouldn't recommend these to shoppers needing a pair of flip flops that can handle more weight. The dimensions of the Mush II were generous enough to keep the edges from collapsing fully as we shifted our weight, but these aren't what we'd suggest for those hunting for a truly supportive flip flop.
Traction
We put the Mush II through the wringer to test traction, wearing them for adventures of all shapes and sizes, from casual strolls to terrain debatably not well-suited for flip flops. While this wasn't the strongest metric for the Mush II, it did well in some scenarios, landing it in the middle of the pack.
With the soft build of the Mush II, it was immediately apparent that the outsole wasn't the most grippy. Fortunately, the outsole was quick to get scuffed, improving its performance on lower-angled terrain. As we ventured further from the trailhead, we found the Mush to fall back in the review's lineup on steep trails and slickrock, where several other options have full-blown outsole treads similar to a pair of hiking shoes. This was also the only pair of flip flops that had several small rocks impaled into the soft sole during hikes. While these aren't what we'd suggest for all-terrain flip floppers, the Mush II has enough traction to keep up with typical everyday surfaces, from sidewalks to docks to low-angled trails.
Versatility
From dinner hangs to water sports to overland adventures, the Mush II was heavily examined for its versatility. After extensive testing, we can happily say these scored above average, making these a relatively “do-it-all” model.
The Mush II is equally happy on land or in the water, which we can't say about all the flip flops we tested. As with most models, these naturally float, making them easy to retrieve if they fall off in a lake or river, and the texture of the footbed doesn't get too slippery if your feet get soaked. The neutral style of the Mush II makes them work in many social settings as well, though they aren't the most dressy if you're trying to get away with open-toed footwear for a more formal occasion. The most substantial setback relative to versatility was the lack of traction in more rugged terrain, as previously shared. These are best for those intending to keep their flip flops on lower angled surfaces, from docks to mellow coastlines. Fortunately, these also weigh a modest 6.45 ounces, making them easy to take anywhere.
Style
While style varies greatly from person to person, we've found the Mush II to offer nice aesthetics across a variety of settings, earning an above average score.
These have a neutral and relatively conservative look that make them work for wearers of all ages and locations. We polled friends and family from several regions to weigh in, and across the board, these were given the thumbs-up. Without leather, these aren't the most formal, and there aren't many style options to choose from, but the aesthetics of the Mush II are a positive.
Should You Buy the Teva Mush II?
As long as you're not intending to get too exploratory in your flip flops, the Mush II is well worth the modest price tag. These are comfy and can handle many activities, though they aren't the most supportive. Whether you are shopping on a tight budget or just prefer inexpensive flops, the Mush II should be kept on your finals list as long as their setbacks aren't dealbreakers for you.
What Other Flip Flops Should You Consider?
If you're needing something with more support, the Olukai Ohana is well worth your time, also offering top scores all-around. If you're wanting something that's not quite as expensive as the 'Ohana, the Reef Santa Ana did very well in testing, with improved traction and dressier looks.
