Our Analysis and Test Results
Storage and Ease of Packing
The Matador Packable offers 30 liters of storage. In reality, this meant that we were able to pack for a trip we took over a 3 day weekend, including clothes, a pair of shoes, and toiletries. There are no organizational pockets inside the duffel, so we packed an extra tech pouch as well to hold things like earbuds and charger cords. The single external pocket is perfect for our phone and keys. When not using it for travel, we found it handy to keep this bag in the glovebox of our car. We would pull it out to carry groceries, or for when something random popped up, like scoring a collection of vintage bobbleheads on Facebook Marketplace.
You can't have a duffel bag that's both highly compressible and rigid for easy packing. The Matador has almost no bag structure at all, and sliding clothes into it felt like loading a grocery bag.
The Matador Packable also has only one pocket outside the main compartment. For air travel or a quick road trip, this pocket was handy for a couple of phone chargers and a battery bank, but you're better off looking elsewhere if you want more organization.
Ease of Transport
For a bag that weighs so little, we were impressed that the Matador Packable offers five ways to carry it. It has two side grab handles, two main carry handles, an adjustable shoulder strap, and the compression straps can also be reconfigured to slide onto a luggage handle or be used as backpack straps. The main setback? There's no padding on any of these straps or handles, which makes it less comfy to carry a heavier load.
The shoulder strap would have been a welcome addition to the Matador Packable, but it has no padding whatsoever. When we were wearing a thicker jacket, the plain webbing didn't feel too bad. But when we were wearing just a T-shirt, the material would dig uncomfortably into our shoulder. In most cases, this bag is best kept for light use.
The flip side is that transporting the empty, and compressed duffel is super easy. It weighs a half a pound and packs up smaller than most water bottles. We never hesitated to toss it into our luggage when flying internationally as a backup souvenir bag, and would throw it in our work bag if we were planning to attend a hot yoga class after work and wanted to separate our soggy clothes afterward.
Construction Quality
The material is thin, light, and easily crushable, but the Matador Packable is impressively tough. We're not saying we would trust it as checked luggage, but the nylon construction is abrasion-resistant and can even handle brief drizzles. The buckles and strap adjusters are all plastic, but they didn't break throughout our testing season.
The 100-denier thickness of the nylon used in the Matador Packable handled several rounds of our weighted drag tests. The bottom of the bag held up impressively well, and the DuraGlide™ zippers opened/closed reliably throughout all of our travels with the Packable. In our water resistance testing, however, we found this duffel kept our stuff dry for only a few minutes. While the nylon beaded water decently, it eventually soaked through, and the zippers leaked quickly.
Weight & Size
This is where the Matador Packable shines brightest. If you need something lightweight and won't take up much space in your closet or car, this is a no-brainer. As we shared earlier, it's light enough to pack inside other luggage and use at your next destination, where you might want another bag for day trips, gift shopping, or away-from-home fitness sessions at the gym.
We weighed the Matador Packable at .53 pounds, making it one of the lightest duffel bags out there. This puts it at a staggering .28 ounces per liter of storage with its 30-liter capacity, which is a phenomenal weight-to-volume ratio.
The Matador Packable packs effortlessly into its exterior pocket and is ridiculously small. Once in “storage mode”, it easily fits in a car's glove box, an overstuffed piece of luggage, or a cluttered coat closet. When you want to use the Packable, it also unfolds easily from the storage pocket.
Should You Buy the Matador Packable?
Whether you need a just-in-case bag that lives in your car or want to keep weight down in your next duffel bag, the Matador Packable is our favorite packable duffel. The main drawback is that the price is a bit high for a “just in case” bag. However, we have reason to believe that it will last quite a while, and may be the only lightweight duffel you ever need to buy.
What Other Duffel Bags Should You Consider?
Check out the BAGSMART Weekender for an even lower-priced duffel bag with more padding. It has a similar set of “best uses” as the Matador Packable, but is a bit smaller, and has more internal pockets to keep your stuff organized. If you like the Packable's low weight but need more room, consider the REI Co-Op Roadtripper, which comes in a wide variety of sizes. The Roadtripper also has a generally rectangular shape, which fits longer items, such as a fishing rod case.
