Our Verdict

The Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20 is a dependable, no-nonsense synthetic sleeping bag prioritizing warmth and all-weather reliability over weight savings. It maintains insulation even when damp, making it a strong choice for wet environments or unpredictable weather. During our testing, it proved warm and comfortable, even on frigid nights. However, it comes with the typical tradeoffs of a synthetic bag. It's noticeably heavier and bulkier than comparable down sleeping bags. It's particularly tough to stuff into its compression sack, which is of questionable quality. Despite those concerns, we believe backpackers who want a reliable bag in any weather will appreciate the reassuring consistency and comfort of the Trestles.

The Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20 might be the warmest, most affordable sleeping bag we tested. It's rated at 12°F for its lower limit, and when we tested it during 30°F nights, we were pleasantly warm. It certainly felt like we were still a ways away from pushing it to its temperature limit. The draft tube and collar also did well at keeping cold drafts at bay. Plus, it has a sizeable interior pocket.

It was also quite comfortable. Though a mummy-style bag, it left enough room to move around without feeling like you were in a straitjacket. The material is soft to the touch and quiet — not quite premium feeling, but better than other budget-friendly bags we tested. The synthetic fill lofted up well for a non-down bag – one tester commented that it felt “cloud-like”.

And water resistance is an oft-underappreciated feature of synthetic sleeping bags. The synthetic fill will retain its insulation properties even when wet, which is great if you happen to get caught in an unexpected downpour that wets through your gear to your bag. The Trestles even has a PFC-free, durable water-repellent treatment to keep coffee spills and light rain from soaking through right away.

Dislikes

It takes quite a bit of work to pack away the Trestles, and it's a pretty large, heavy package to stuff into your backpack. Given that it weighs 3.7 pounds and takes up over 9 liters of space, that's quite a meatball to carry very far on your back.

And what makes the bulk more of an issue is that the compression sack's quality is lacking, so we wouldn't rely on it to last long. The bag already has to be rolled very tightly to fit into the compression sack, and because it's so massive, you want to tighten the compression straps as much as you can. The first time we tried, we heard a pop on all four straps, which sounded like a stitch snapping – we didn't even pull all that hard.

It's a chunky compression sack, but not as robust as we expected it to be.   Credit: Arthur McMahon

Should You Buy the Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20?

All things considered, the Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20 is a fairly good sleeping bag. It'll certainly keep you warm, dry, and comfortable through the night. However, given its size, it's probably better suited to short backpacking trips or even car camping. If you're planning to go more than a few miles or stay out for multiple nights, you'll be happier with a smaller sleeping bag.

What Other Backpacking Sleeping Bags Should You Consider?

If you like the Marmot Trestles for its comfort and warmth, you should seriously consider spending a bit more for the superior Exped Terra 15 – this down bag improves upon the Trestles in just about every way, except for continued warmth when wet. But if you're pinching pennies, the even more affordable REI Co-op Trailmade 25 is a well-rounded down bag also worth considering.
