| Bottom Line | Super warm for the weight, this high-quality bag is less roomy than we'd like, though it is offered in plenty of size options | This down bag is an excellent value for anyone who prizes warmth, comfort, and affordability above all else | With overlapping down-filled flaps instead of a zipper, this unique bag is exceptionally warm and comfortable | An affordable, no-frills bag that's perfect for anyone just starting out, though its packed size limits its appeal for long backpacking trips | A low-cost, warm-weather bag that's fine for warm summer nights, but should not be trusted for anything even close to cold weather |

The REI Co-op Magma 15 doesn't disappoint in any sense. It's plenty warm, with an ISO-rated lower limit of 9°F, and it's filled to the brim with 850-fill-power, water-resistant down insulation. It also features a DWR finish on the shell, which further helps this bag stay dry in wet climates.
The Magma 15 is wholly designed to be inclusive, with nine sizing options, including short, narrow, long, and wide. While the mummy shape is meant to hug your body to improve insulation, the range of sizes lets you find the perfect fit for your body shape.
Beyond the basics, it includes a trove of nice-to-have features. A contoured hood with two drawcords makes it easy to cinch and snuggle down on chilly nights. A fluffy insulated yoke traps warm air, and a sewn-in anti-snag zipper strap makes it easier to get in and out. We always appreciate sleeping bags with internal storage pockets, which help preserve the battery life of critical electronics.
Dislikes
The REI Co-op Magma 15 is a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. There's not much to dislike about this bag — it just doesn't outperform its premium-priced competition, and there are more affordable bags we like a bit more.
Compared to those premium sleeping bags, the Magma 15 is just a little heavier, though just as warm. While it has some nice features, it doesn't match the overall quality of more expensive bags. It's a shame the Magma 15 is this expensive; otherwise, it would surely be an award-winner for overall value.
And though multiple sizing options are available, the mummy-style shape will take some getting used to, especially if you're coming from a big, rectangular sleeping bag. Mummy bags maximize warmth, that's why they're so popular, but they can also feel restrictive. We tested the regular size of the Magma 15, and measuring 54 inches in the hips, it's even on the tighter side for a mummy bag.
Should You Buy the REI Co-op Magma 15?
The REI Co-op Magma 15 is a fantastic backpacking bag and could be an excellent upgrade from a budget-friendly sleeping bag. It offers the warmth, comfort, and packability most backpackers need. Really, the only catch is that there are warmer, more comfortable bags that don't cost quite as much.
What Other Backpacking Sleeping Bags Should You Consider?
If the Magma 15 is a bit outside your budget, the Exped Terra 15 is a very similar, though less expensive option. In many ways, it's directly comparable to the Magma 15, just a bit heavier. Or, if you're already set on investing in a premium sleeping bag and want to go all out and get the best bag possible, nothing beats the Western Mountaineering MegaLite. It's warmer, lighter, and more packable than the Magma 15, and as a hand-sewn sleeping bag, its quality is unmatched.
