Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
We have long been aggravated by tent manufacturers' advertised sleeping capacities – most 3-person tents are a more reasonable fit for two adults. Bucking that trend, the REI Half Dome 3 comfortably fits three adults, even sleeping shoulder to shoulder.
Livability
The REI Half Dome 3 offers an impressive 43.7 square feet of space – just slightly larger than a California king mattress. It's not only one of the most spacious backpacking tents on the market, but also one of the few 3-person models that truly fits three adults and still leaves some space for their gear. The extra room makes the Half Dome 3 a great way to transition from car camping to backpacking without giving up all your creature comforts.
On top of that, this tent boasts two 9.4-square-foot vestibules, each about the size of a classic card table. If you're sharing this tent with two others, it's plenty of space to keep three backpacking packs on one side, while you use the opposite door to move in and out of the tent. The vestibules also zip open wide, creating a nice cross-breeze, thanks to the equally large, mostly mesh doors. When the weather is clear, strip back the rainfly for an unobstructed view of the stars.
The already ample space is enhanced by an abundance of pockets, which make it easy to store delicate items (like sunglasses), while keeping other critical gear close at hand (like headlamps). Keeping the floor clear of clutter makes the Half Dome 3 feel even larger than it already is.
Weather Resistance
It may not be the lightest tent on the market, but heavier-weight fabrics afford better protection from wind and rain. The rainfly is sewn from 40-denier ripstop nylon, which is the sweet spot for thickness, weight, and durability in tent fabrics. The rainfly is about as thick as a premium umbrella, and just as effective at shedding rain.
The pole skeleton is a single system that spans the entire tent, making the Half Dome 3 particularly sturdy. Even on nights when we weren't expecting strong winds, we used the pre-rigged guylines and straps at the corners to add tension to the rainfly, helping it shed rain more effectively.
We're generally concerned about a tent's ability to withstand rain and wind. But as the humidity rises, ventilation is almost as much of a factor for keeping you comfortable inside the tent. The spacious interior already feels less clammy than other, smaller tents, while two vents on the roof help warm, moist air move up and out. As the rain starts to peter out, open up the doors to clear out condensation, while your backpacks stay protected on the other side of the vestibules.
Weight
As is often the case with more spacious tents, the REI Half Dome 3 is heavy. Every tent we test comes with a tent body, rainfly, and poles, so we use this “minimum trail weight” to directly compare them.
However, the total “packaged weight” – which includes the storage sack, footprint, and stakes – is a more accurate measure of what you'll actually carry. With a packaged weight of 7.1 pounds, it's hard to ignore that the Half Dome 3 weighs nearly double the lightest 3-person tents. That said, the total weight becomes much more manageable if you divvy up the components among two tentmates.
Packed Size
As a heavier-weight tent, the REI Half Dome 3 is also on the bulkier side. While it packs down to 27 inches long by 7.5 inches in diameter – about the size of an extra-thick foam roller – we loved the included storage sack. It has a generous top opening that makes it easy to repack this tent, and cinches shut to keep everything secure inside your pack.
Even though the Half Dome 3 is large on its own, splitting the components makes it much easier to carry this tent on a multi-day trip. We carried the bulky tent body in the main storage sack, put the footprint and rainfly in a separate sack, and put the smaller storage sack for the stakes inside the included sack for the tent poles.
Durability
The Half Dome 3 might not be lightweight, but it sure is durable. The floor and lower walls are sewn from a 75-denier polyester taffeta, which is noticeably thicker than the rainfly. This is also one of the few models we tested that comes with a footprint, a tailored groundsheet that adds waterproofing and extra protection to the bottom of your tent.
Not only is this tent easy to set up, but thanks to the footprint and durable floor, we were much less concerned about setting up the Half Dome 3 on an abrasive granite slab, or throwing it down on a stick-strewn forest floor. (Though it's always a good idea to clear your tent site, so you don't get poked by a rock or a stick!) The 7000-series aluminum poles are also noticeably thicker than the poles on lighter tents, adding another layer of durability to this tough tent.
Should You Buy the REI Half Dome 3?
The Half Dome 3 is the perfect choice for anyone who simply wants a tent with a bit more space. It's perfect for car camping, and if you divvy up the components, it's a much more reasonable choice for a long weekend of backpacking – especially if you plan to share this tent with two friends. It's more affordable than the premium tents we tested, and, given its durable construction, it's sure to last for years of adventure.
What Other Backpacking Tents Should You Consider?
The REI Co-op Half Dome 2 is essentially the scaled-down version of the Half Dome 3 – it's incredibly spacious for one person, yet lives up to its name by comfortably sleeping two adults. We recognize that backpacking gear is expensive, and if you're working on a tighter budget, it's worth checking out the The North Face Stormbreak 3, which is quite a bit cheaper than the Half Dome 3.
