It's difficult to beat the consistency and versatility we found in the Peak Squeeze. Whether out for a day mission in California's High Sierra or an extended trip in the Cochamó Valley of Southern Chile, our testers appreciated the streamlined and durable design that was easy to use and maintain in the field. The versatile performance is perfect for unexpected conditions, and we think you'll appreciate the affordable price tag.

Water Quality

The Peak Squeeze is a hollow fiber water filter that's designed to protect against bacteria and protozoa while meeting the U.S. EPA and NSF P231 drinking water standards for removing bacteria and parasites. The manufacturer claims include physical removal of 99.999999% of all bacteria, such as Salmonella, cholera, and E.coli, 99.999% of all parasites, and 99.999% of microplastics. The filter is also designed to remove silt, sand, and cloudiness greater than 0.2 microns, however, we found it was prone to clogging after a couple liters in mineral rich water sources.

We were impressed by third-party lab results commissioned through SGS Labs that confirmed the filter's performance when it comes to removing bacteria, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium, eliminating >99.9%. And to our surprise, it also eliminated >78.6% of all viruses. However, LifeStraw doesn't claim this filter eliminates viruses, and we would recommend purchasing a filter that's designed to do so if you're planning an international adventure.

This filter excelled when we used it in the mineral-rich, sandstone waters of the Virgin River in Zion National Park. The 0.2-micron filter did a decent job of maintaining performance in the sections of the river that had better flow. However, we did need to perform several backflushes after filtering the substantially thick water we encountered after heavy rain in the Cochamó Valley of Southern Chile. Overall, this versatile and lightweight filter removed most visible and invisible particulates (minus a few grains of sand that sank to the bottom of the soft bottle) and produced fresh, clean water while protecting our testers from harmful bacteria, protozoa, and microplastics.

Ease of Use

The Peak Squeeze features a sleek, streamlined design that's easy to use, whether you're new to the backcountry or a seasoned veteran of the outdoors. The design is simple; included in the box is the one-liter soft bottle, the filter itself, and a backflushing syringe for maintenance. If you're planning on going ultralight and simply utilizing the hollow core filter for sipping direct from the stream, great - the filter ships ready for use. If you'd like to use the soft bottle for filling and storage, simply fill the bottle with water before squeezing directly into your mouth or cook pot. It doesn't get simpler than that. You can also attach the filter to another bottle if you prefer something more sturdy than the collapsible soft bottle. While the opening in the soft bottle can be difficult to fill in shallow water sources, we love the versatility of the filter that allows us to sip direct from the stream, even if it does require a little extra effort to do so.

We love that the Peak Squeeze is consistently easy to use in all of its forms. It doesn't have a ton of extra parts to keep track of when you're out in the wilderness, and you can even remove the filter and use the soft bottle as a storage container when water sources are few and far between.

Durability and Maintenance

The thick and premium vessel material was one of the first features we noticed about the Peak Squeeze design, and after years of testing, it is still one of the features we appreciate most. When trekking through particularly consequential terrain and murky water sources, the Peak Squeeze is the bottle we select when it comes to durable performance that alleviates any concern of rips, tears, or snags in the BPA-free plastic construction of the soft bottle vessel. It weighs a bit more, but we feel it's worth the peace of mind. Being stranded in the backcountry without a clean water source is no laughing matter.

The Peak Squeeze needs more frequent backflushing, but the process is fairly simple. Simply disconnect the microfilter by twisting counterclockwise, then submerge the filter in fresh water while utilizing the backflushing syringe to push fresh water through the 0.2-micron hollow core filter. LifeStraw recommends performing this maintenance regularly, as it only takes a few minutes and will greatly increase your treatment time in addition to extending the life of the 500-gallon filter.

It is also worth mentioning that LifeStraw recommends storing the filter in a saline solution (one teaspoon of salt in purified water deep enough to cover the device) to prevent the filter from drying out and preserve the membrane's hydrophilic properties.

Treatment Time

The Peak Squeeze has one of the fastest filtration times we've tested; however, we were never able to meet the advertised 3 liters per minute flow rate. On average, depending on how well the filter is maintained, we found a consistent flow rate of around 30 seconds per liter, or 2 liters per minute. This varied based on the water source itself and whether the stream was shallow or provided ample flow that allowed us to easily fill the soft bottle. While not the fastest filtration option, it requires minimal effort and remains competitive among collapsible bottle designs.

For backcountry enthusiasts trying to move as quickly as possible, we highly recommend following the maintenance guide, which requires more frequent backflushing in order to maintain optimal flow rates. We also recommend pre-filtering from some water sources such as during high flow spring runoff or glacial fed streams, since the minerals and silt in the water can often reduce your flow rate and affect your treatment times.

Weight and Packability

Water filters don't get much easier to pack than the Peak Squeeze. Weighing only 3.8 ounces for the entire kit and packing down to a size that easily fits into your palm, you won't even notice it in your day bag, waist belt, or backpack. Our team has packed this filter all over the High Sierra and Yosemite National Park. We even took it on an expedition to the remote valleys of Cochamó to assess the overall weight and size of this compact squeeze bottle filtration system. Although the Peak Squeeze isn't the lightest squeeze bottle system that we've tested, we think it's worth its weight in gold, especially considering its durability and versatility.

We like packing the Peak Squeeze with the filter removed and rolled inside the soft bottle, which we think best maximizes the compact design. Packed like this, it's easy to tuck into the pocket of a running vest or the hip pocket of your backpack for easy access. We love the one-liter version of this design, but for trailblazers who are counting every ounce of their backcountry kit, it is also available in a 650 ml option that weighs only 3.2 ounces. After many years of testing, we can confidently say it's worth carrying a little extra weight in exchange for the durability, consistency, and versatility of the Peak Squeeze.
