Our Analysis and Test Results
It's hard to exaggerate how large this cot is. It's a great option if you want to make sure you have plenty of room to shift position or just like the extra space. Honestly, this could almost be enough bed for two people if you didn't mind being extra cozy, and you both were on the smaller side.
Performance Comparison
Ease of Setup
The first — and most important — thing we thought about when it came to comparing cots side-by-side is the amount of effort it takes to set up and break down each camp bed. This metric accounts for 40% of the final score for each cot and is based on the time and hassle it took to assemble and disassemble each product, if we found it common to get fingers or hands pinched during this, the number of pieces each cot is constructed of, and how easy it is to fit back into the carrying case.
This cot isn't too much hassle to put together, but it can be a bit awkward, mainly due to its size. We also found that it is very easy to get your fingers pinched when the legs swing around if you aren't careful — there was plenty of swearing the first time we experienced this.
Once you spin the legs around, you unfold the main body of the cot width-wise. You then need to slide the foot bar through the canvas and lock it into place using a pair of keyhole slots. The head bar can be a little trickier to get into position since it fully tensions the cot. However, the swingarm pivot greatly helps with this.
It's not any harder to break down, but it can be a little trying to get the folded cot back into its carrying bag, especially if you are on your own. The Teton Sports Outfitter XXL does take up a bit of space during the folding or unfolding process, so you are going to want to do this outside your tent.
Portability
Next, we rated and scored how portable each of these products are, which accounts for 30% of the final score for each product. As you might imagine, the Teton Sports Outfitter XXL did not do the best in this metric.
The Teton Sports Outfitter XXL tips the scale at a bit over 25 pounds, which solidly makes it one of the heaviest cots of the group. It's still very large when packed and would be an absolute pain if you had to carry it for more than five minutes or so. The bag does have carrying handles but they don't do all that much when it comes to alleviating the pain of carrying this cot around. You could maybe sling it over your shoulder, but the bottom line is this cot is for car or drive-in camping only.
The Teton Sports Outfitter XXL can also be challenging to pack around when loading up a car. It takes up a ton of space on its own, and its awkward shape makes it hard to stack gear on top of it.
Comfort
Moving on to how it felt to sleep on the Teton Sports Outfitter XXL, which constitutes 30% of the total score. We enlisted the help of a panel of judges to score how comfortable each cot is, combining their overall opinions to determine scores. We also looked at how easy it is to hit your head, elbow, or ankles on parts of the frame if you toss and turn during the night. The Teton Sports Outfitter XXL did much better in this metric.
All of our judges found this cot to be exceptionally comfortable. It has loads of support, with the bars at the head and foot preventing any drooping. It's also large enough that you really have to try to hit parts of the frame when you adjust positions. If you want an extra comfortable night outdoors, the Teton Sports Outfitter XXL is a great choice.
Durability
Our last series of assessments looked at the durability of each cot, based on how the unit we tested held up to our rigorous testing process. We based scores on the weight limit of each cot and our opinion of the overall design. Additionally, we also deducted points for any damage we found at the conclusion of our evaluations and scoured existing user reviews for any common complaints.
This burly cot didn't show any damage beyond the slightest scrape or scratch once we were done with it. The pivot arm makes it easy to avoid damaging the plastic part that fits into the keyhole slot when tensioning the cot as well. Overall, this thing is an absolute tank, rated for up to 600 pounds. It might not be the easiest cot to lug around, but at least it's built to last.
Value
The Teton Sports Outfitter XXL isn't a cheap cot, so it might not be the best option for bargain hunters, but it should last for quite a while, making it a decent value if you amortize the cost over its expected life.
Conclusion
The Teton Sports Outfitter XXL is the answer for anyone who wants a big burly cot that can take some abuse. It's comfortable and not overly difficult to put together, but it's far from the best if you are weight or space limited when it comes to gear for your next trip.
