Our Verdict

It can be perched above-head on anything from a tree branch to an extra boot lace, and it produces a decently powerful beam of light — this is why we love the Black Diamond Moji R+ as our go-to lantern for the backcountry. Take this small illuminant with you wherever you're headed, and enjoy hours of light at camp. It's super compact and has a strobe feature as well as a palette of colored lighting options. It weighs almost nothing, but at the same time is built to handle the rigors of the outdoors. It's slightly heavier than other mini lanterns in our lineup, but that's because it's simply built better.

Brightness

We gave the Moji R+ above-average scores for this metric. It certainly isn't the brightest bulb in our lineup, but it gives off a strong, soft light that is still powerful enough for nearly any backcountry situation.

Our Moji R+ was our key source of nighttime light during a multi-week trekking expedition in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal, where electricity was hit or miss. It lit up our outdoor tables and provided lighting in a pinch when we needed to light up our tea house rooms, find a piece of gear, or repair something after nightfall. This pint-sized lantern boasts a high setting that can reach 200 lumens, which really came in handy during our stay in basecamp tents.

Battery Life

Our runtime and charging tests proved the Moji R+ to be on par with the manufacturer's specs for this metric, earning it very decent marks. For its size, it packs a decent punch.

When placed on its highest setting, our Moji R+ ran consistently for about 5.3 hours, thanks to its rechargeable lithium battery. This compares well against other lanterns that share its compact size and basic functions. Likewise, it uses a micro-USB cable to recharge, a process that took us a little more than 2.5 hours.

In general, our testers had only two complaints: The Moji R+'s low-setting run time (about 16 hours) didn't compare well against similar lanterns. Secondly, we would have preferred it to employ a USB-C cable for charging to avoid having to carry more than one type of power cord.

If possible, we feel the more popular USB-C cable would be a better option for charging the Moji R+. It would alleviate the need to carry multiple cables on longer expeditions, where things can often get lost.

Ease of Use

The Moji R+ scored big in this metric, passing all of our tests with flying colors. It performed well in our at-home experiments, but it also killed it on the trail. Using this lantern is fun.

This lantern is small, smooth, lightweight, and super easy to handle and transport. It sports two buttons on the side that are easy to find and use. We actually forgot the instructions on our maiden voyage and were still able to figure out the functions of both buttons in a snap. The larger button serves as the main power button. It also adjusts brightness and switches the light to its strobe mode. The smaller button switches the lantern from white light to colored, and then again from solid colors to an ongoing rainbow display which fades between each hue — a very calming feature for evening conversations at camp.

Lastly, two metal hooks unfold from the bottom of the lantern, allowing it to hang just about anywhere. However, these hooks were a little tough to pry loose and usually required the help of a pocket knife or stick. We also loved the four embedded magnets, which allow the lantern to be easily mounted on steel.

Features

There's only so much that can be stuffed into a lantern of this size, but the Moji R+ still offers enough to garner slightly above-average scores for this metric.

In addition to the great features like magnets, hooks, and different color options, we think two overlooked traits of the Moji R+ are its durability and its pleasing light. This lantern isn't indestructible, but it certainly is tough. It can handle being dropped on the ground, and its IPX4 rating proved to be quite weatherproof. Its smooth design also makes it easy to stuff in any corner of your bag. Additionally, a frosted exterior lens does a great job of diffusing light, making it comfortable on the eyes, and allowing the light to be more omnidirectional. When it came to fun, we often enjoyed sitting around the Moji R+, taking in its soothing rainbow light show as we made plans for the next day on the trail. This is a nice feature that takes the place of campfires.

Weight

Compared to larger lanterns we tested, the Moji R+ crushes most of the competition in terms of weight, making it ideal for long-haul adventures.

Topping our scales at just 5.8 ounces, the Moji R+ is a tad heavier than similarly designed lanterns, but when we consider its toughness, compact size, and run times, we think it hammers its peers, making its few extra ounces a reasonable trade-off for function, reliability, and performance.

Should You Buy the Black Diamond Moji R+?

Yes, you should definitely purchase the Black Diamond Moji R+ if you routinely go big in the backcountry. Be it climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, river running, pack cycling, or trekking — this little tyke is the best lantern we've come across for expeditions or larger-scale adventure. It's compact, lightweight, tough, and it has a decent run time. It's also a perfect gift for that gearhead in your life who loves the outdoors.

What Other Lanterns Should You Consider?

If you count every ounce, the BioLite AlpenGlow Mini weighs about two ounces less than the Moji R+, but it's close to double the size, and we don't think it's as durable. The Goal Zero Crush Light Chroma weighs less than either of them, but it packs up larger, and it's certainly not as sturdy. We also liked the weight of the UCO Leschi.
