The Garmin GPSMAP 67i is a full-featured handheld navigator with integrated inReach satellite technology, making it significantly bulkier than dedicated messengers. While most modern adventurers prefer the superior interfaces of smartphone mapping apps, this device is the premier choice for those who want to reduce dependence on their phones and consolidate navigation and communication into a single, rugged tool. Only choose the 67i if you are committed to navigating on a standalone handheld GPS; otherwise, a smaller messenger is likely a better fit.

While our testing team prefers the superior interfaces of smartphone apps, we recognize that many adventurers value the rugged independence of a dedicated handheld GPS. As a standalone navigator, the Garmin GPSMAP 67i is a solid, button-operated tool that provides all the modern functions you need without relying on a phone. While smartphone navigation is often more intuitive, the 67i offers critical redundancy and single-purpose reliability for those who want their communication and navigation consolidated into one indestructible device.

Dislikes
The primary drawback of the GPSMAP 67i is its significant weight and bulk. At roughly 8.1 ounces (230g), it is more than double the weight of the 3.5-ounce inReach Mini 2, a disparity that is only justifiable if you require dedicated, button-operated navigation features. For most users, this extra half-pound is a steep price to pay for functionality that their smartphone already handles more intuitively.

Should you buy the Garmin GPSMAP 67i?
This is only a suitable choice if you know that you prefer to navigate in the wild with a handheld GPS device. Otherwise, choose something else.
What Other Satellite Messenger Should You Consider?
The Garmin inReach Messenger Plus does more (it can send and receive pictures and audio memos that the GPSMAP can't) and is half the weight and 1/3 the bulk. The inReach options (GPSMAP or others) are better than most current, integrated smartphone solutions. The only smartphone integrated solution we recommend you rely on in true wilderness situations is T-Satellite from T-Mobile. That service is as good as that provided by inReach devices, and is integrated into the smartphone you'll carry anyway.
