Our Verdict

The Civivi Mini Praxis is one of the better choices for an inexpensive pocket knife. While the blade quality is on par with its price point – which is passable, but nothing special – the grip is notably more secure than other mini-knives we tested. As a smaller knife, it's especially comfortable to carry, and the finger flipper makes it easy to pull out and open one-handed. Civivi offers a variety of colors and handle materials, letting you put a personal spin on an otherwise affordable pocket knife.
REASONS TO BUY
Affordable
Fits in a pocket well
Comfortable handle for a mini knife
REASONS TO AVOID
Doesn't hold an edge well
Limited corrosion resistance

Beyond its stellar value, the Mini Praxis is impressively comfortable to carry. Featuring a deep-carry pocket clip, it sits fully in your pocket, which is more secure and a bit friendlier for the office setting.

Even though it's a 'mini' knife, the Mini Praxis feels secure. The textured fiberglass handle is comfortable to grip tightly and stays grippy even when wet.

The D2 alloy used is essentially the steel for budget blades. One of the first real steel alloys developed specifically for knives, it's known for above-average toughness and edge retention. This knife did surprisingly well in our tests, gliding through paper and cardboard without snags, even if it gave us a bit more trouble while whittling.

Dislikes

The tradeoff of D2 steel's great edge retention is that it's difficult to sharpen. Additionally, as a 'semi-stainless' steel, it's not great at resisting corrosion.

While like the handle overall, it's just a tad too short and thin to give a truly secure grip while cutting with a lot of force. Even though the 'flipper' action is intended to be zippy, using the finger flipper without flipping the knife out of your hand is difficult, simply because it's so light.

Opening the Mini Praxis is done through a finger flipper, which is easily accessible, but requires some force to snap open properly.   Credit: Kyle Hameister

Should You Buy the Civivi Mini Praxis?

This isn't a heavy-duty knife, nor is it a premium option that will last a lifetime. However, it is a fantastic value that outperforms knives that cost twice as much. Notably, you can't switch the pocket clip to the other side, so it's not quite as comfortable to grip if you're a lefty.

What Other Pocket Knife Should You Consider

We also recommend checking out the Mini Praxis' big brother, the Praxis Flipper. For just a few dollars more, it smooths out many of the Mini's flaws. If you're looking for a mini knife specifically, the Gerber Zilch is a better option in this price range. The blade is higher quality than the Mini Praxis – in particular, it's more corrosion-resistant. The Benchmade Mini Griptilian is the best mini-knife we've ever laid hands on; however, it costs nearly three times as much as the Mini Praxis.
