Our Verdict

The Paraframe Mini knows what it is, and what it isn't. It is a tiny, inexpensive but all-metal pocket knife; it isn't' a serious tool for anything but basic cutting. But not everything has to be taken seriously – at this price point, the Paraframe Mini is a pocket knife that can be thrown around, beat up, and lost without losing much sleep over it. This durable pipsqueak is a great backup knife to stash in a glove box, center console, or tool chest.

The all-metal build is another defining feature of the Paraframe Mini. The satin-polished stainless steel handle feels smooth but not slick, so even though you can only wrap a few fingers around it, it won't easily slide out of your hand.

As one of the shortest knives we tested and weighing just 1.5 oz, this is certainly a mini knife. Large cutouts in the handle not only make the Paraframe Mini lightweight but also exceptionally easy to clean. Drop it in the mud or gutter, and a forceful wash under the faucet will bring it back, good as new.

Dislikes

The Paraframe Mini has little semblance of finesse. The opening and closing action is unusually stiff, and the blade lock is so strong and tucked away that it is fairly difficult to disengage. Its blade is made from an unspecified steel alloy, though we have to assume it's at least some sort of budget stainless steel.

Although it felt sharp out of the box, cutting rope and cardboard wasn't particularly easy. Whether it's the steel or the size of the blade itself, the Paraframe Mini also was not especially easy to sharpen. We had a tough time holding such a small knife at a consistent angle throughout the sharpening stroke.

We could fit just three fingers around the knife, with the pinky dangling – it would look comically small in larger hands. There's barely a cutout for the forefinger to sit in, nor is there a front guard to protect your forefinger if your grip slips.

For us, though, the bigger issue was with the knife twisting in our hand. It's so thin and so small that when we tried to make any high-pressure cut, the knife would unexpectedly roll on our fingers, quickly, like one rolls an ankle.

Should You Buy the Gerber Paraframe Mini?

Bomber-built, dirt-cheap, rust-resistant, and small enough to fit anywhere, the Paraframe Mini is a great choice for an inexpensive, knock-around pocket knife. As long as you have no pretense about this replacing a real pocket knife as an everyday tool, it will serve its purpose quite well.

What Other Pocket Knife Should You Consider

The Paraframe Mini is so small, we think of it more as a micro-sized knife than 'mini'. We've tested some surprisingly good mini knives: the Gerber Zilch or CIVIVI Mini Praxis are both much more practical, even if they are slightly more expensive.
