Our Verdict

Looking for a stylish hat to keep you cool and protected during long days at the beach? Look no further than the Hemlock Lifeguard Straw. After wearing it through many of California's intense, sunny summers, we've found this airy straw hat to be one of the most breathable we've tested. Its colossal 4.5-inch brim delivers serious shade, while its flexible build keeps it comfy from sunrise to sunset. The crown does let some light reach the scalp, but the face and neck stay well protected. We also love that it comes in a huge array of colors and prints, so you can really let your personality shine. All in all, as long as you can treat the delicate straw with care, it's a beach-day winner.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Born in 2016 by sunny California natives, the Hemlock Lifeguard Straw is the perfect beach companion. It hits the sweet spot between shade, comfort, and airflow, all while adding personality to your sun-ready look.

Protection

Thanks to its massive, 4.5-inch brim, the Hemlock is basically like your own personal umbrella. While most sun hats max out at about 3.0 to 3.5 inches, the Hemlock goes the extra mile for maximum face protection.

The underside of the brim is lined with a special UPF 50+ material, which keeps the sun's harsh UV rays from slipping through the delicate straw weave. At the peak of the day, the Hemlock Lifeguard did an excellent job keeping our faces, necks, and ears shielded from the sun. Plus, if you choose a dark-colored underbrim, you can minimize glare from reflective surfaces like water or sand.

Even with all that brim, though, the Hemlock isn't perfect: its flat design wasn't as effective in the morning and evening when the sun was low in the sky. And the top of the crown isn't lined, which left the tops of our scalps a bit more exposed. For bald heads, a little extra SPF up top can help round out the coverage.

Comfort

While the Hemlock doesn't quite have that barely there feel that makes you forget you're even wearing a hat, it comes pretty darn close.

None of our testers experienced any tension spots with this hat. Its soft elastic sweatband gently hugs the head, while its flexible chin strap holds it firmly in place, without ever digging into the forehead, chin, or cheeks. In fact, some testers dubbed it one of the most comfortable hats they had ever worn.

So, why didn't the Hemlock earn a perfect 10 in comfort? Well, it's big and a tad heavy. We didn't notice the weight much, but we did have to be mindful not to bump into people or objects around us. Plus, most color options are only available in One Size, which tends to suit average-sized heads best.

Hemlock Sizing Explained
One Size: Most of Hemlock's 20+ styles are offered in a standard, one-size-fits-all, which works best for users with medium to large heads measuring 22.0-23.1 inches.
XL: For extra-large domes, Hemlock offers a limited selection in XL, best for heads measuring 23.5-25.5 inches.
Big Kid: For small adult noggins, we recommend shopping from Hemlock's Big Kid line, which comes in 10+ colors and fits head sizes 21.3-21-6 inches.
Little Kid, Toddler, Baby: Love the style? Consider a mini version for your mini-me!

Breathability

Thanks to its loose straw weave, the Hemlock Lifeguard is one of the most breathable hats we tested.

We could always feel a gentle breeze flowing over our heads, which helped keep us cool on sweltering summer days. While we did notice a small amount of heat buildup along the elastic sweatband, it did an excellent job quickly wicking moisture away to keep sweat under control. All things considered, we think the Hemlock is the perfect companion for maximizing airflow on hot, sunny days.

The Hemlock's delicate straw isn't a fan of being squished, stuffed, or otherwise roughed up.

Packability

Unlike polyester or cotton alternatives, straw hats are delicate and require careful handling. Even just stuffing the Hemlock in your beach bag can cause permanent cracks in the straw. Because it can't be safely compressed without risking damage, the Hemlock failed our packability tests.

After repeatedly stuffing the Hemlock into a large backpack, we noticed several cracks on the brim and where the lining is stitched into the crown. Some users also report warping if the straw gets wet. The key is simple: handle it gently and keep it dry. For the best longevity, we recommend traveling with it by wearing it on your head, letting it hang around your neck by the chin strap, or placing it at the top of your bag where it won't get crushed.

Should You Buy the Hemlock Lifeguard Straw?

The Hemlock Lifeguard Straw hits three key points: excellent face protection, all-day comfort, and a breezy, keep-you-cool design. As long as you don't mind the gentle hand this hat requires, we think it is a fantastic, affordable option for beach days, poolside lounging, and low-key gardening. If you need ultimate scalp protection or something better suited for air travel, though, we have better recommendations.

What Other Sun Hats Should You Consider?

The Solbari Holiday is one of the best vacation beach hats out there. It provides excellent face and scalp protection, is made from a breezy cotton/linen blend, and easily folds up into your carry-on. It's a bit pricey, though, and best suited for ladies with medium or large heads. For a more budget-friendly pick, the FURTALK Bucket Wide Brim Women's and Men's hats deliver on the essentials without taking up too much space in your bag. They're comfortable, breathable, and surprisingly protective for the price.
