Our Analysis and Test Results
The Purifyou Premium was one of the most pleasurable bottles to drink from. Its cap has a large thread and rubber gasket, which allows it to whirl open and closed with ease. The smooth glass lip feels good on the lips, and the premium glass results in superior taste (i.e., it doesn't leach chemicals). The silicone sleeve makes it easy to grip, and it won't slip on surfaces. It also makes it relatively fumble-proof. Read on to learn more about where this glass bottle excelled and where it may fall short.
Performance Comparison
Closure
This bottle has a hard plastic lid inset with stainless steel and a durable rubber gasket. The bottle thread is large, which makes it quick to open and close in a satisfyingly smooth fashion. When twisted down tight, you can feel the strong seal. The thick glass lip is also ultra smooth, which feels good on the lips when you tip it up to take a chug. Although twist-off lids are usually less enjoyable to use than quick flip contenders, this bottle made it borderline fun to drink water.
Perhaps the only drawback of the lid is that it takes two hands to operate. The aforementioned rubber gasket does an excellent job of creating a seal. We had zero leakage from this bottle during field testing, and it got a perfect score on the controlled leakage test, where it was filled with blue-dyed water and closed, then left on its side on a white sheet of paper for a day to test for leaks. If you're looking for a bottle that's easy to operate one-handed, then this isn't the one for you. Also, because of its small mouth, it requires a bottle brush to clean if you're going to put anything in it that won't easily rinse out. It is dishwasher safe, so you could also give that a try.
Insulation
This bottle is made of thick glass but doesn't really offer much insulation. In fact, it received one of the lowest scores on this test. It's not sold as an insulated bottle, so if that's what you're looking for, then you should check out something in that category.
The glass is quite good at absorbing solar radiation. During the insulation test, where bottles were left out under the sun for 6 hours, temperatures in this premium glass contender reached 110 degrees F! This isn't good if you are going for a cool drink of water on a hot day. However, if you want to brew some sun tea, then it's about the perfect temperature to extract your herbs.
Taste
Taste is generally where glass bottles excel. Because glass is chemically inert, it neither holds onto nor leaches flavors into liquids. So whether you're filling your glass with cool water, or hot tea, you can be sure that it won't alter the flavor (or chemical composition). In addition, this bottle's plastic cap is lined with stainless steel under the lid, so your liquids won't touch plastic, which we've found is the most likely material to leach chemicals.
The Purifyou Premium received one of the highest scores on the taste test, where we filled each bottle with 100-degree F water and let it sit for half an hour. When we tasted the water from this bottle after 30 minutes, there was no detectable flavor. We also could not detect any plastic smell from the lid. In choosing this glass bottle, you can rest assured that it's not going to alter the taste of your liquids, nor will it absorb any of the flavors.
Ergonomics
The threads on this bottle's narrow lid are large, so you don't have to twist much to get it open. Right off the bat, this makes it easier to use than other twist-off lids. The smooth glass allows the lid to spin off with ease. The cap has a finger ring that makes toting it around as easy as lifting a finger, and at just under a pound, it doesn't strain the wrist. If you have big fingers, then you may want to test it out before you buy or look into a bottle with a larger carry handle. The silicone sleeve adds protection against accidental drops, has extra cushioning at the base, and allows the bottle to grip surfaces. The grid-like design makes it comfortable to grip and hold. As a bonus, the sleeve has graduated mL and ounce marks on one side and times for tracking hydration on the other.
One of the most satisfying features of this bottle is the thick glass, which feels good on the lips when sipping from this bottle. All in all, this was a very enjoyable bottle to carry around and drink from, but it's not the bottle to take to the crag or anywhere else you may encounter a lot of hard, sharp surfaces. It's also a bit too large for most cup holders, which is a consideration if you want it to fit in holders in your car or at the gym. Although the lid is leakproof, you also may want to avoid tossing it into a bag that you're going to be throwing around. The silicone sleeve offers some protection, but at the end of the day, the bottle is made of glass. Although the applications are limited, if you're looking for a glass bottle, then you'll want to check out this top contender.
Material Quality
This bottle is made from borosilicate glass, which is a type of glass used for lab beakers, cookware, and even medical implants (like glass eyes). It's more thermal and chemical resistant than other types of glass, so your bottle is less likely to crack if you pour boiling liquids into it. While most folks will probably just fill it with cold water, it's nice to know that you could use it for hot liquids if you want.
The lid is made from hard plastic, yet the finger carry loop has smoothed edges that are comfortable to grip. Under the lid, you'll find a stainless steel plug so your water doesn't touch plastic and a silicone gasket that allows the lid to seat tightly and prevents leaking. The silicone sleeve around the outside is pliable enough to take on and off with ease, but don't stretch it too much, or it will break. Overall we were impressed with the quality of materials used in this glass bottle and the design that focuses on comfortability and purity of water.
Should You Buy the Purifyou Premium Glass Bottle?
Although the applications for glass bottles are more limited, there are pros to premium glass. It won't leach chemicals or hold onto flavors. The bottle is transparent, so you'll know how much liquid is left (especially with the aid of the graduated volume marks on the silicone sheath). If you're looking for a bottle that considers purity of contents, is comfortable to tote around, and easily grips most surfaces, then this one's for you. If you want a bottle that fits in a cup holder, is insulated, or won't break if you toss it around, then you'll want to look elsewhere.
