Our Verdict

The Mammut Skywalker 3.0 is a simple hardshell helmet for anyone seeking an affordable, durable option. Like other entry-level helmets, it's hugely adjustable – almost anyone can pick this helmet up, and it will fit them easily. The hard-shell plastic makes it super durable, but added durability also adds weight. Considering the price – especially compared to more modern designs at the same price point – it's tough to recommend this helmet over others. However, because of its adjustability and durability, it's a very reasonable choice for guide services looking for a helmet for a rental fleet.

Bottom Line An affordably priced hardshell helmet that's reasonable as a rental, but a bit outdated for individual climbersA modern, lightweight helmet that costs nearly half as much as the competitionA modern hardshell helmet that is rugged and durable without sacrificing ventilationA durable, modern hardshell helmet for a reasonable price, but for that price, there are better options on the marketA very popular, albeit clunky, helmet at an unbeatable price point

Our Analysis and Test Results

Likes

The Skywalker 3.0, as the name suggests, is a legacy climbing helmet from Mammut, and for good reason – it's a simple, proven design for a long-lasting climbing helmet. If you're worried about accidentally sitting on a lightweight foam helmet, then this hearty hardshell is a reasonable choice.

The Skywalker 3.0 is easily adjustable over a huge range of sizes. We liked that we could comfortably wear a hat underneath when the sun was shining, or a beanie underneath when the temperatures dropped. One of our testers noted that this is the helmet of choice for the guide service he works for because it's so adjustable for guests.

Dislikes

The Skywalker 3.0 is quite poorly ventilated. On hot days of cragging, we definitely noticed how much sweatier our head was with this on than with a helmet with even modest ventilation.

The most important part of wearing a climbing helmet is actually wearing it – if your head is sweaty and uncomfortable, you're prone to take it off when you should really have it on.

Should You Buy the Mammut Skywalker ?

This is a good option for an affordable helmet that's sure to stand the test of time – even one of our testers keeps this helmet around to wear while developing routes, because he knows that it will protect his head from rockfall without falling apart. It's a highly adjustable, cost-effective option for guide services, but individuals should consider other options.

What Other Climbing Helmets Should You Consider?

For a similar price, the Black Diamond Capitan E offers better side protection and a more modern, more comfortable design. However, for the price, it's impossible to beat the Metolius Hardtop – it's a modern, lightweight climbing helmet that costs as much as old-school hardshell options.
