Our Verdict
The Mammut 9.5 Alpine Core Protect Dry is one of our favorite ropes for climbing objectives big and small thanks to it protective dry treatment, cut resistant sheath, and thicker diameter. We loved taking it up Middle Cathedral during a first ascent push where we used it for lead climbing, jumaring, hauling, micro traxioning, and top-roping without any damage to the sheath. We also appreciated the dry treatment that allowed the rope to maintain performance despite some early season seeping. The dry treatment makes the rope feel a little sticky at first but this gets better with use and it doesn't absorb dirt like other sticky dry treatments. It is more expensive than other designs, but we think its worth every penny due to its durability and versatility.

Our Analysis and Test Results
Likes
The Dry Core treatment and thicker diameter of the Alpine Core make this one of the most durable designs that we've tested. When it came time to selecting a rope for a big wall first ascent in Yosemite Valley during the spring, this is the one we chose. Whether we were lead climbing, jumaring, top-roping, micro-traxioning the crux pitches, or hauling loads, this was the rope for the job. After a week on the wall, the rope looked almost brand new.

Although the dry treatment on this rope design can be a little sticky at first, we noticed that it got better with use. Overall, it handles similarly to other 9.5mm diameter Mammut ropes, offering soft catches and a nice balance between rigidity and softness.

Dislikes
While we love the Dry Core and sheath of the Alpine Core design that made it a great choice for our big wall first ascent in Yosemite Valley during wet spring conditions with seedy rock, the coating does feel quite sticky to the touch. This created less than ideal handling at first, however, it got better with use and didn't absorb dirt and debris like other sticky dry ropes. The middle mark wears down easily, still easy to identify against the yellow, but we'll be re-marking it before our next big adventure.

Should You Buy the Mammut 9.5 Alpine Core Protect Dry?
If you're after a workhorse of a rope that includes a dry treatment along with a versatility diameter, the Mammut 9.5 Alpine Core Protect Dry. Big walls, new routing, wet conditions, cragging single pitches, wandering multi-pitch routes, you name it, this rope can do it. Although not the skinniest alpine cord that we've tested, we love having the thicker diameter when we're exposed on big walls and multi-pitches.

What Other Climbing Ropes Should You Consider?
The Mammut 9.5 Alpine Core Protect Dry is definitely our favorite alpine and big wall workhorse thanks to its versatile diameter along with protective dry treatment. If you're interested in another durable design that's better for single pitches close to the ground, check out the Sterling VR9 9.8. It has an ever thicker diameter as well as a protective dry treatment. The Mammut 9.5 Crag Classic is another one of our favorites, performing very similarly to the Alpine Core in width and durability, however, it's more affordable and doesn't have a dry treatment.
