The Deploy Down 0.5 Full Zip is a true ultralight down jacket. It weighs under 6 ounces in men's size medium, saving you more than 2 ounces over the second-lightest down jacket we tested.
The Deploy's zippered hand pocket doubles as a stuff sack. When you aren't wearing it, you can easily stuff the jacket into the left pocket and zip it shut with the double-sided zipper.
If you plan to carry your down jacket as often as you wear it, as you would for backpacking or climbing, a lightweight and packable down jacket like the Deployt is a great option. However, it's not as good if you're looking for cozy warmth in frigid conditions. Read more about this model's warmth below.
Dislikes
The biggest drawback of the Deploy is that it isn't as warm as many down jackets, limiting its use to shoulder season activities. It could be a great midlayer as well, but that would involve purchasing another, potentially expensive, outer shell.
Backpackers and alpine climbers count every ounce for the most extreme missions, but a casual user won't notice the difference between 10 and 6 ounces in their backpack. On the other hand, everyone will notice when a jacket isn't warm enough.
If you plan to wear the Deploy in deep winter cold, you'll need to pair it with a thick baselayer, a warm fleece midlayer, and possibly an outer shell. It is not warm enough to use as a winter jacket in cold temperatures. For a lightweight layer to throw on for summer nights in the mountains, it's great, but it is not a stand-in for a winter coat.
Also, the Deploy fits tighter than some down jackets. This is a good thing for alpine climbing and for wearing it under a weather-blocking shell jacket. However, if you layer a thick baselayer and fleece underneath, this jacket starts feeling pretty tight. If you want to wear multiple layers underneath, we recommend sizing up.
Should You Buy the Black Diamond Deploy Down 0.5 Full Zip?
The Deploy is a great option for anyone who wants the lightest down jacket possible and doesn't care about price. It can be a barely noticeable addition to your pack for backpacking and multi-pitch climbing adventures, and for some people, that's all that matters. However, we can't deny that this is an expensive down jacket, and most others cost significantly less. For typical winter use that involves morning commutes and evening dog walks around town, this just isn't the jacket we'd recommend.
What Other Down Jackets Should You Consider?
The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer is almost as light as the Deploy, but costs hundreds of dollars less and is a good alternative for budget-conscious ultralight aficionados. If you're looking for a warmer jacket, but still want decent packability, check out the REI Co-op Magma 850 Hoodie. It strikes a great balance between warmth, weight, and practical usage. Plus, it's one of the most affordable options in our lineup.
