Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
We put the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece through several months of testing, taking it on a wide range of adventures from skiing to climbing. We also wore it in more casual settings, from watching hockey at the ice rink to going out to dinner. This is a very high-value fleece for shoppers who prioritize low price above all else.
Warmth
The Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece offers some of the best “warmth per dollar” we've ever seen in a fleece jacket. While it isn't the top scorer, it outperformed some competition that's way harder on the wallet.
Amazon constructed the Full-Zip Polar Fleece with a classic polyester fleece material. While this inherently lacks ventilation, it is an impressively warm layer that's effective at combating lighter winds. Stronger gusts forced us to add a shell jacket over the Polar Fleece, which provided warmth across a wide variety of conditions. For skiing, we appreciated the thicker polyester on chilly days while riding chair lifts, though we did need to add more insulation.
Comfort
Despite a ridiculously low price, the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece is a soft layer to wear for hours on end. It's most ideal for those who prefer a relaxed cut and no hood, but it certainly outperformed its price point.
The brushed polyester of the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece felt nice against our skin, and its baggier fit boasted excellent range of motion.
The Polar Fleece even offers a bit of light stretch if bending over or fitting more layers underneath it. However, the excess fabric on this fleece was mildly annoying for some testers, who disliked how much it bunched up in the back, and even when sizing down, the relaxed fit remained prone to bunching.
Breathability
If you need a fleece to exercise in, the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip might not be what you're looking for. It's designed for warmth and is not the best at shedding body heat or moisture, since there is no real way to release heat aside from unzipping the main zipper or removing it entirely.
As was often the case with classic polyester models, the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece was breathable enough for cooler days, and we didn't even get sweaty wearing this as part of our layering system while skiing at our local resort during the winter. However, in warmer temperatures, we had to shed the Polar Fleece.
Layering Ability
This fleece has a baggier fit, and it's easier to fit layers underneath rather than overtop. However, looser overlayers (like our tester's ski jacket) fit just fine.
The Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece runs relatively large and provides plenty of space to fit layers underneath it. On the coldest of days, we were able to fit a couple of base layers under and then simply throw on a larger shell jacket before hitting the slopes. However, if you want a layer that's easier to throw clothing on top of, it's best to look elsewhere.
Weight
This is a model that's on the heavier side of the “midweight” fleece class. For backpacking or any weight/space sensitive trips, the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece might be on the bulkier side, but this weight might not be an issue for you if you're just using your fleece as a casual layer to wear around town.
This fleece weighs 15.7 ounces in a men's medium. It landed somewhere around the middle of the pack in our review's lineup and might not be an issue for the ultra-budget shopper.
Should You Buy the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece?
If price and warmth above all else are your priorities, the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece is a great buy. From social gatherings to work commutes to mellow hikes, this jacket might be all you need, and it'll save you a bunch of money. If you have larger ambitions for outdoor recreation, it might be worth looking into a more technical layer, but for the occasional ski day or evening walk, the Full-Zip Polar is a great option.
What Other Fleece Jackets Should You Consider?
If you're willing to bump up your budget, the relatively inexpensive REI Co-Op Trailmade is a favorite amongst our testing team for casual use and has a bit better durability than the Amazon Essentials Full-Zip Polar Fleece (plus the benefit of REI's warranty). If you'd like a layer with better breathability and a less baggy cut, consider the Rab Ascendor Light Hoody, though it'll put a bigger dent in your bank account.
