Our Analysis and Test Results
Comfort
Arc'teryx did a great job with the comfort of the Kyanite Lightweight, with a brushed polyester that felt great on our skin. As one tester shared, “In mid-winter, I almost wanted to wear a T-shirt underneath the Kyanite, rather than a long-sleeve base layer, just because it felt good on my arms and neck.” This update has a slimmer fit, but if you like a close-fitting fleece, the cut change might be a plus.
In addition to the Kyanite Lightweight feeling soft against the skin, Arc'teryx uses minimal interior stitching to reduce rubbing. The slim fit gives this fleece a more precise cut, though its high-stretch polyester makes it feel much less restrictive, even with arms crossed or reaching overhead.
Despite its precise fit, some excess fabric tends to bunch in the stomach and wrist areas. Overall, this bunching didn't significantly affect the layer's comfort, but we sometimes had to smooth out the zipper area when clipping a backpack's hip belt.
Warmth
As a lighter version of the original Kyanite Hoody, the Kyanite Lightweight isn't the warmest fleece out there. Below about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, we needed to keep moving or add another layer to keep the goosebumps and chills at bay.
The face fabric of the Kyanite Lightweight did make this fleece at leastslightly wind resistant and kept us from adding a layer for quick dog walks or when a hiking trail briefly emerged into a wind-exposed meadow from the woods. In winter temperatures, it still worked well as a close-to-base piece, but we (of course) had to add substantial insulation and weather resistance to our layering system.
Breathability
This was a standout difference from the Kyanite to the Kyanite Lightweight, with a thinner overall construction making it easier to shed body heat while the heart was pumping as we hoofed it uphill. For resort skiing, this layer also kept us from getting too sweaty on a leg-burning mogul run. If breathability is high on your priority list, this fleece may deserve a spot in your closet.
The Kyanite Lightweight has a brushed interior and a jersey knit exterior that encourages moisture outwards away from the body. Paired with its lighter-weight construction, this is a jacket you can trust in the backcountry to keep you from getting wet from the inside out. The Kyanite Lightweight's breathability also makes it ideal as a closer-to-body layer when used with other jackets in Arctic temperatures, where things can get impressively sweaty when hiking or skiing.
Layering Ability
Overall, the Kyanite Lightweight is a layering-friendly fleece. However, if you've owned a Kyanite fleece in the past, it's important to know this update is not as ideal for layering underneath, given its slimmer fit compared to the old Kyanite's more relaxed cut.
The tighter fit of the Kyanite Lightweight makes it a great piece to wear right against your base layers, then add more insulation or weatherproofing over it. From trimmer mid-weight insulation to baggy down jackets, we had minimal issues with layering as long as we didn't try to stretch it over other jackets.
The Kyanite Lightweight, and all previous versions, don't work particularly well with climbing helmets. It's too small to stretch over a helmet, yet it bunches too much underneath. If you otherwise like the sound of the Kyanite Lightweight, we simply suggest using an under-helmet beanie to keep your ears warm when using a helmet in cold temperatures. This hood works best when pulled over a hat.
Weight
The aptly named Kyanite Lightweight weighs a scant 10.8 ounces in a men's medium. This is substantially lighter than the classic Kyanite and is easier to justify bringing on a backpacking trip or in your carry-on roller bag for a weekend getaway.
Besides being decently light, the Kyanite Lightweight is also quite packable. It squeezes easily inside a climbing or fishing backpack, and we didn't have much trouble packing it into a daybag for lighter-duty hiking. Fleece jackets in weight classes like this are generally more versatile because they're less cumbersome to bring along.
Should You Buy the Arc'teryx Kyanite Lightweight Hoody?
If you want a fashionable fleece that'll still perform year-round, the Kyanite Lightweight is a good option. It's a lighter-weight layer that has better breathability than the classic Kyanite, though its slimmer fit won't work for everyone. We appreciated the brushed polyester interior for days when we could get away with wearing just a T-shirt underneath, and its stretch kept our upper bodies unrestricted for climbing or fishing.
What Other Fleece Jackets Should You Consider?
If you want a slightly more relaxed fit, check out the Rab Ascendor Light Hoody, which has even better breathability than the Kyanite Lightweight Hoody and includes a chest pocket, which our testers love to use to keep cell phones warm in the winter. If the price tag of the Kyanite is giving you pause, put some thought into the budget-priced Patagonia Micro D Fleece Pullover, which is one of the lightest models on the market.
