Our Verdict

The zip-off pant has been around for decades, offering hikers a convertible option when the day calls for both shorts and pants. The Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Convertible is among the latest budget options in the zip-off world, offering breathability and mobility without breaking the bank. As long as you don't mind a baggier fit, these are capable pants for a wide variety of outdoors adventures, we just recommend keeping them away from sharp sticks or rocks.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Whether you love or hate zip-offs, there's no arguing with the practicality of these dual-function hiking wear. Affordable models like the Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Convertible are a great choice for hikers on a budget wanting convertible hiking pants. While we unearthed a couple of setbacks with these pants, the Silver Ridge still offers a lot of value overall.

Comfort and Mobility

The Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Convertible are incredibly mobile pants. However, Columbia achieves this mobility through a baggy fit rather than building a stretchier pair of pants. Ultimately, these landed in the middle of the pack in this metric.

Columbia built the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible with 100% recycled polyester. While we see polyester in many different types of clothing, it's not as often used in hiking pants because it has very little stretch.

Fortunately, these have a very relaxed fit, and we had minimal restrictions in movement. The against-skin comfort wasn't quite as soft, but as long as you like a relaxed fit, you'll likely find these to be comfy. The excess fabric, however, might be an annoyance for some hikers.

Venting and Breathability

These are impressively breathable pants, even when they aren't converted to shorts mode. As is often the case with this sub-class of hiking pants, the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible came in at the top of the charts.

In pants mode, the loose fit of the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible allowed ample airflow, and the fabric itself was also breathable. When temperatures got really hot, we quickly were able to zip off the lower legs and enjoy shorts for the rest of the day- just remember to keep those lower legs handy when the sun goes down, and things get chilly.

Versatility

The Silver Ridge Utility Convertible can handle an impressive list of outdoor activities; we enjoyed wearing them hiking, fishing, backpacking, and climbing. The temperature range these pants can handle is far better than traditional/non-convertible pants. Where these got a score reduction was style - you probably wouldn't find us going from the trail to the bar in these if we could help it.

These are mobile, breathable, and (of course) can be transformed into shorts. In shorts mode, these are actually fairly aesthetic since they just look like normal shorts, but in pants mode, they have the instantly recognizable zip-off style that has been known to turn hikers away. If you don't mind too much about looks, these might be as versatile as you can hope for, but if you'd like to be able to take your hiking pants to a restaurant, the looks of the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible can be a turn-off.

Whether going hiking in shorts in summer or enjoying a fall stroll, these are very versatile- just be sure you're ok with their looks.

Features

As a convertible pair of pants, it's hard to complain about the features of the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible. In addition to being able to be transformed into shorts, they have an integrated belt and some effective pockets that were helpful for carrying sunscreen or a cell phone.

Not all zip-offs have a quality zip-off system, but the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible was fairly easy to turn into shorts or turn back into pants. There's also a color-coded red zipper on one side to help you differentiate between right and left.

We don't always see a belt included with a pair of hiking pants, but we loved seeing it with the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible, especially given that it's a budget model. This belt was effective, easy to use, and lightweight.

The pockets layout of the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible includes two front drop-in pockets, one velcro-closed thigh pocket, one zippered thigh pocket, and two back pockets- one of which has a velcro closure. We appreciated having a few pockets with an actual closure system, though we wouldn't put anything too important, like a cell phone, in a velcro pocket if going scrambling or climbing.

Durability

The Silver Ridge Utility Convertible isn't the most robust pair of hiking pants we've tested, but if you're careful with them around slot canyons or dense brush, you'll extend their life.

The 100% polyester build of the Silver Ridge Utility Convertible held up fairly well, but the stitching wasn't quite as dependable. Even after lighter use, we found some fraying at the thigh and ankle areas. These are quite a bit less expensive than the premium options, but they will require some mindful use around anything more abrasive.

Should You Buy the Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Convertible?

These are worth adding to your shopping cart if you need a pair of convertible pants but don't want to burn all your hard-earned cash. This option offers great mobility and breathability, and is even one of the few tested options that came with its own removable belt.

What Other Hiking Pants Should You Consider?

If you want convertible pants but aren't a fan of zip-offs, we strongly suggest the Prana Stretch Zion, which utilizes a roll-up lower leg system to convert into long shorts/capris. These are also substantially more durable than the Silver Ridge. If you'd like to dive into another zip-off option, consider the REI Co-op Sahara Convertible.
