Our Verdict
The On Performance-T Shirt is the most technically capable running shirt in our lineup. At 3.60 ounces, it is one of the lightest we tested, and the laser-cut ventilation in the back panel delivers breathability that no other shirt here can match. Its bonded hems and taped seams are virtually undetectable against the skin, and it dried super fast, in 15 minutes. The close fit and technical aesthetic limit its casual crossover, and the price is the highest in the lineup, but for hot training days and race mornings, nothing else comes close.

Likes
On a hard effort in the heat, the On Performance-T Shirt sets itself apart immediately. The laser-cut ventilation holes in the back panel dump heat more aggressively than any other construction in the lineup, and we stayed cool during hard interval sessions in warm conditions in a way we could not replicate with any other shirt. The bonded hems and taped seams are virtually undetectable against the skin, eliminating every potential chafe point. The recycled polyester and elastane blend has excellent four-way stretch that moves with the body, and at 3.60 ounces, it almost disappears. In our dryer testing, the Performance-T dried in 15 minutes, five minutes faster than the next group. It absorbed some of the least amount of water of any shirt we tested (2.2 ounces), so there is less to evaporate in the first place.

Dislikes
The Performance-T is a specialist. The close fit feels race-ready but does not transition well to the gym, errands, or casual wear. There is no UPF rating for sun protection, which is a notable gap for a shirt designed for outdoor running. Given its high price, the investment is significant for a shirt that serves a single purpose. Runners who want versatility will find themselves reaching for something else when the run is over.

Should You Buy the On Performance-T Shirt?
If you train in the heat and want the most technically capable shirt money can buy, the Performance-T delivers. It is the clear choice for hot race days and intense training sessions. While it performs well at moisture control, it is important to note that it has no UPF rating, making it an odd pairing for hot sunny days. If you need a shirt that pulls double duty for casual wear or gym workouts, the narrow focus and premium price make other options a better fit for your rotation.
What Other Running Shirts Should You Consider?
The REI Swiftland T-Shirt delivers nearly as much breathability at nearly half the price, with a slim fit that still works for trail running. The Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Shirt isn't as breathable as some competitors, but it is much more versatile.
