Our Verdict

The Baleaf Running Athletic Shorts deliver where it counts for new runners or anyone building a gear rotation on a budget. Three zipper pockets, two on the sides and one in back, provide secure storage that several premium shorts in our lineup cannot match. The UPF 50+ protection offered in the Baleaf is a wonderful addition for outdoor enthusiasts. The mesh brief liner and 100% polyester construction are functional rather than impressive, and the waistband shows its price point on longer efforts, but for runs under an hour and everyday training, the Baleaf handles the job.

What surprised us most about the Baleaf Running Athletic Shorts is how secure the storage feels for the price. The three zippered pockets lock down a phone, keys, and gels, while several shorts costing two or three times as much rely on open-top hand pockets or snap closures that feel far less secure at pace. UPF 50+ sun protection is a genuine bonus for runners who train outdoors in the summer, and the 4-way stretch polyester moves well enough for daily mileage. For someone new to running who does not yet know exactly what features matter most, the Baleaf covers the basics without demanding a significant investment.

Dislikes

The waistband is the weakest link. It is narrower than our top performers and tends to fold over once sweat accumulates, particularly past the 45-minute mark. The 100% polyester fabric is smooth but runs warmer than the recycled blends and nylon constructions in our higher-scoring shorts, and it dries more slowly after heavy perspiration. The mesh brief liner is functional, providing basic support and coverage, but it feels thin and lacks the soft, body-hugging quality of premium liners. At 4.80 ounces, the Baleaf is not heavy by any means, but it is noticeably less airy than the ultralight options from Patagonia and Janji.

Should You Buy the Baleaf Running Athletic Shorts?

If you want zippered pockets that keep your essentials secure and you do not want to spend a lot, the Baleaf is an easy recommendation. It is best suited for runs under an hour and general fitness use. Runners who are logging longer distances or running in hot climates may want to invest in a lighter, more breathable option, but as a starter short or a reliable backup pair, the Baleaf punches above its weight class.

What Other Running Shorts Should You Consider?

The NorthYard Workout Running Shorts offer a similar three-zipper-pocket design at an even lower price, though without a liner. If you want to step up in comfort and breathability without a huge price jump, the Brooks Dash Shorts deliver one of the best waistbands we tested. For runners who want budget pockets and an unlined option with a secure internal zipper, the REI Active Pursuits Shorts are worth a look.
