Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
The Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie keeps things nice and breezy with an oversized cut for enhanced air circulation and a full array of snaps up front when you need direct exposure to the passing breeze. The tightly woven fabric is serious about blocking harmful UV radiation for maximum confidence while you're in sunny weather from dawn to dusk. Unlike other button-ups, this shirt also comes with a detachable hood and minimal thumb loops to keep both your head and hands just as well covered as your body. The River Rambler begs to be taken out on a water adventure to cast some lines or simply hang out at the shore, but with the inclusion of pockets, it makes a good casual shirt for hanging around in your hometown or traveling to far-off locales. And although there are more breathable shirts out there, not many of them have the fabric or seam reinforcement to take on some serious abuse in the field.
Comfort and Fit
The billowy design of the Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie promotes air circulation, and keeping air moving is one way to stay comfortable when temperatures rise and the sun's rays are unrelenting. The woven fabric is not as soft and nowhere near as stretchy as many knitted options, but the River Rambler is comfortable enough to wear, thanks to the roominess in the cut.
The Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie really does embody a relaxed fit, with generous measurements throughout. We measured the torso length at approx. 30.5" for a men's size, “Large,” and a bottom width of 24", both of which are above average even for sun shirts. If you are between sizes, consider sizing down, so that the fit isn't overwhelmingly liberal. Sizes are offered from XS to XXXL in a few different muted colorways.
Sun Protection
Woven fabric, like what is found on the Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie, usually fares well for sun protection, as the tighter weave naturally lets less sunlight through than a looser knit.
We tested the veracity of Patagonia's claims that the River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie has a 40+ UPF rating with our UV light source and UV card setup. By projecting our UV light on the UV card with the shirt in between, we can get a rough idea of how much UV light is blocked. We knew woven fabrics worked well, but we were not quite prepared to see these results. The River Rambler resulted in almost no UV light detected on our card! Almost every other sun shirt we tested showed at least a little in this stress test. This certainly gives us massive confidence that the 40+ UPF claim is valid, if not completely underrated. UPF 40+ means 97.5% of UV light is blocked from reaching the skin.
The hybrid features of the River Rambler, most notably the thumb loops and removable hood, do nothing but further boost its sun protection score compared to other button-up sun shirts.
Though not perfect on the River Rambler, few other button-up shirts come with these optional, but useful features. The thumb loops are found on the sleeves themselves, rather than further out on an extended cuff. Using the thumb loops will stretch the sleeves a bit, which isn't as comfortable as having longer sleeves or placing the thumb loops farther out. The hood also won't naturally stay put in windy conditions, but we solved this issue by using a binder clip to keep it firmly fastened to the bill of our hat.
Breathability
For the most part, we observed poor breathability on the Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie. The very tight weave of the main material that does so well in blocking UV also lets little air through the fabric itself, and the heavier weight of the fabric means it wears heavier both when dry and when wet with perspiration.
In the lab, we tested the main fabric using a constant flow of air, which we blocked with the fabric of the River Rambler. We then measured the resulting flow pressure that still comes through. 88% of the initial airflow was blocked by the woven fabric of the River Rambler. This is in comparison to an approximate 25% decrease in airflow found with many knitted sun shirts.
We also tested on-the-line dry times out of the wash. Fast dry time correlates closely with performance in the field, such as how quickly sweat leaves the garment. And a saturated shirt is usually less breathable than a dry shirt. The Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie showed very slow dry times, taking longer than most other shirts to dry completely. Tightly woven fabrics like those found on the River Rambler don't expose as much surface area to the air, and the heavier weight of the fabric just means there's more of it to dry out completely.
There are a few details about the River Rambler that set it apart from both hooded sun shirts and button-up shirts. Some of the panels of fabric use a slightly thinner, more breathable fabric with a little more stretch to offset the main fabric. These are found on the hood itself, as well as panels running down the backside of the sleeves. And of course, the front of this shirt can open completely with convenient snaps to quickly release trapped heat and allow unimpeded airflow to hit your chest.
Versatility
The Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie has “fishing” imprinted on its DNA. This shirt is made for staying out in harsh, sunny, exposed conditions for hours on end, be it on the secret bend of your favorite creek or adrift on a small craft in the middle of a lake. What it's not going to excel at is high-output activities like hiking or running, as it just doesn't breathe as well as many other options. Although fully opening the front can help matters, at the expense of sun protection.
For everyday wear, the Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie is also a fine choice. At first blush, it passes as just another button-up shirt, especially since the hood – the most technical part of the shirt – is fully removable as well. In our opinion, it wouldn't look too out of place in casual workplaces. Because this shirt has so many pockets, it would also make an exceptional travel shirt for those who plan to bring only a few tops to save space in their travel bag.
Durability
The woven fabric on the Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie is inherently more durable than the stretch-knit fabric on other shirts. If you're planning to bash through a bunch of brush to get to your secret fishing hole, this is one of the top sun shirts to consider.
The River Rambler features many reinforcements to the shirt's basic design to promote product longevity, going beyond using a tough woven fabric.
The reinforced front placket will stop the snaps from ripping off the front, and there is even a spare button hidden on the reverse side of the shirt to replace the ones used to connect the hood.
All these features and heavy-duty fabric make the River Rambler weigh more than other shirts, but if durability is important, we think it's worth a few more ounces.
Should You Buy the Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie?
Even without considering the useful thumb loops and hood, the Patagonia River Rambler Hybrid Hoodie is one of the strongest performing button-up sun shirts we've had the pleasure of testing. If you've been jealous of your hooded sun shirt friends, but want to keep the utility and look of a button-up, this shirt is worth trying on. Absolutely excellent sun protection is a non-negotiable for many, and on that front especially, the River Rambler delivers.
What Other Sun Shirts Should You Consider?
The Mountain Hardwear Canyon Long Sleeve is another button-down option that wears a little lighter and is a better choice for sweatier days, but you'll miss out on ultimate sun protection. The Columbia Silver Ridge Utility Lite shares the loose fit, classic aesthetic. The Black Diamond Alpenglow Pro Hoody is unapologetically, firmly in the hooded sun-shirt camp, but its half-zip and chest pocket give it some of the utility found in button-up shirts.
