Our Analysis and Test Results
Our Analysis and Test Results
This exceptionally soft legging is made with Beyond Yoga's signature Spacedye material, which is an 87% polyester, 13% elastane blend with a brushed texture and four-way stretch. It features a 5" rollover waistband and two hip pockets. It is not surprising to us that, after months of comparative testing, this legging outpaces every other legging in our lineup in the Comfort & Fit metric.
Comfort & Fit
The Spacedye are the uncontested comfort-queen-pants in this metric because of their unbelievably soft material, high mobility, and comfortable high rollover waistband. Some testers say that the Spacedye are the most comfortable leggings that they own. They are one of the only leggings with a double-brushed material, and we really love how soft they are on the outside and inside.
The Spacedye, more than anything, gives us sensory comfort. Our lead tester described it as the inviting soft touch of lamb's ear in a garden. In terms of fabric, it might be described as “buttery” for its suppleness or “peached” for its velvety surface. Our lead tester is a yoga teacher who basically lives in stretchy pants, and these remain the softest she has tested or worn to a yoga class. The material is comfortable because Beyond Yoga uses a fine yarn and then double-brushes the fabric on both the inside and outside so it feels soft on your legs and soft on your hands.
We found that the Spacedye has a relaxed fit, yet the elastane in the material keeps it tight against the skin and gives it phenomenal four-way stretch for yoga or dancing. Because they are so soft, they are our favorite for restorative yoga classes, dance classes, and couch snuggles. We love the waistband on the Spacedye, which is 5" and a rollover design. It stays tight to our waist in every dance or yoga pose.
When our testers first heard the name Spacedye, we assumed it was some sort of cosmic marketing hype. However, when we researched the name, we discovered it describes the material itself. “Space-dyeing” is a traditional technique for combining multiple colors or hues that create a pointillist painting effect, so your eye sees them as blended in the material. This gives these leggings that unique marled or funkadelic color mix. We felt the subtle tone variation creates a little visual depth on our curves and accentuates the body-hugging fit. The mottled appearance also gives a visual softness that complements the coziest material in our lineup.
Compression & Support
The compression of the Spacedye can only be described as very light. They are our top pick for curling up on the couch and low-impact movement for a reason. Although it offers a consistent body-hugging fit, they don't really hold the muscles in. But why would we ever expect something as comfy as pajamas to come out of our drawer for leg day? They wouldn't be so addictively comfortable if they were a squeezy legging.
On runs, we observed noticeably less hold around our calves and thighs than with more technical options, but we want to emphasize that low compression doesn't mean a sloppy fit. The Spacedye always stays flush on the body's curves and keeps its shape. Even when we used them for lifting, they never sagged. Overall, they have the light compression we prefer for low-intensity activities.
Breathability
The Spacedye has thicker material, and the double-brushed fabric traps more air than smoother materials. While the material seems to wick sweat well, the thicker, brushed fabric makes us sweat more than lighter options we tested.
The Spacedye fabric performed on the lower end of our air permeability tests. Even so, it doesn't feel like it traps too much heat on our legs, and despite being warmer, the soft fabric still feels good against our skin. Overall, we would say it is super cozy in cool weather, comfortable on most days, but a little thick for summer heat. We wore them in a hot yoga class, and even though they handled our sweat admirably, they're definitely more comfortable in non-heated studios. The Spacedye also takes longer to dry, but we appreciate that the mottled fabric, especially in darker colors, camouflages sweat.
Durability & Recovery
Again, the soft stretch and velvety feel of the Spacedye leggings earned them a lower durability score. The shape retention is excellent, and the material remains ultra-soft over time, but after about six months of hard use, we started to notice pilling around obvious high-friction zones like the seat of the pants and inner thighs. The weakest point is the seams. We noticed them fraying slightly after about ten dryer cycles. The seams and soft material will last longer if you line dry them.
We would only recommend using the Spacedye as a studio legging. The soft, brushed material isn't made for CrossFit workouts on rough equipment or hiking through brush. Abrasion is the quickest way to snag your soft leggings. For the studio, we are really impressed with their shape retention during class and over time. After a half year of consistent wear and over thirty wash and dry cycles, they keep the same tight fit on our legs. We have noticed no gaping at the waistband or bagging at the knees or ankles.
Versatility
The Spacedye is best worn in the studio, for light gym workouts, or travel days. And, of course, they are the ultimate stay-at-home lazy-day pants. The less compressive fit and low breathability make them less appealing for HIIT and running, and they're not sturdy enough for hiking and outdoor use.
We tested them in different types of yoga classes, and their mobility and comfort make them excellent primarily for slower flows. They can handle hot yoga in a pinch, but they're not our first choice. We tested them in the gym, and they are fine for dumbbell work and resistance bands, but for fast-moving exercises like burpees, running, and jump squats, they felt a little warm, and we recommend more compression. They have two hip pockets that lie flat against our legs and fit our large phone in an OtterBox case. However, they aren't compressive enough to keep our phone from bouncing around during run tests.
In terms of daily wear, they look like a comfy pant. They are very flattering, but the heathered material is harder to dress up, and we usually wore them when we were just headed to the farmer's market or book club at a friend's house. In fact, we wore them a lot while writing our leggings articles because they really are the most comfortable option we tested for WFH days.
Should You Buy The Beyond Yoga Spacedye Out Of Pocket High Waisted Midi?
If you want an incredibly comfortable legging for lounging or deep stretching, the Beyond Yoga Spacedye are some of the most comfortable leggings we have worn to date. The double-brushed material is sensationally soft and has excellent shape retention for studio use. We love them for blissing out in our downtime. We don't recommend them for running, high-impact workouts, or hiking. The pants love to stay home and chill.
What Other Leggings Should You Consider?
If you want a legging that can serve as the base of a polished outfit, then the Vuori AllTheForm might be a better option. These are supremely comfortable and blend in better with everyday clothes thanks to their solid colors and sleek lines. It is also lighter and more breathable for hot yoga. If you are on a budget, the CRZ Yoga Butterlift Origin has a comfortable high waistband and handles more activities, like hiking and running. We love its easy price and vibrant color options.
