The Granite Crest is among the highest quality jackets that we've tested. From the 3-layer construction to the watertight zippers to the velcro cuffs, the construction quality is tough to beat.
Our testers found the proprietary 3-layer H2No Performance waterproofing to withstand moderate to heavy rain with relative ease. The watertight zippers and large hood also increase water resistance, making it worthy of its higher price tag.
Dislikes
While the Granite Crest design features 14-inch pit zips for ventilation, we found it difficult to open them without using both hands, and often getting them stuck in their own material. Without the pit vents, this 3 layer design doesn't breathe very well, although you can open up the central zipper for better ventilation.
Should You Buy the Patagonia Granite Crest?
If you're interested in a high-quality, three-layer construction that includes watertight zippers, a helmet-compatible hood, and is easy to stow, the Granite Crest is worth checking out. Although it lacks some breathability and weighs a little more than the ultralight designs in our review, we think it's great for water resistance in more moderate conditions.
What Other Rain Jackets Should You Consider?
One of our favorite jackets is Patagonia's Torrentshell 3L, which is more affordable and has better water resistance. If the Granite Crest design piques your interest but you want more water resistance, check out the Arc'teryx Beta SL. It also includes water-tight zippers and a helmet-compatible hood, but it's more of an investment. If you're interested in something cheaper with more stretch in the design, check out the Black Diamond Fineline Stretch.
