Our Verdict

The Under Armour Fly By shorts are an affordable, no-fuss option that makes them an easy and approachable starting point for new runners or casual training. They feel lightweight and comfortable, with a soft, airy built-in brief and a simple design that covers the basics without adding unnecessary complexity. For short runs, gym sessions, walks, and everyday wear, they perform just fine and offer a dependable grab-and-go option for low-commitment movement. However, as running volume increases and workouts get longer or more structured, many runners will likely outgrow them in favor of shorts with better pocketing, improved moisture management, and a more refined fit for higher-mileage training.

The Under Armour Fly By shorts are often one of the least expensive options from a major running brand, making them an approachable choice for new runners. They offer solid functionality without requiring a significant investment. These shorts cover all of the basics well enough for someone just getting into running.

The lightweight fabric, built-in brief, and simple design make them an easy starting point before deciding whether to invest in more technical gear.

The fabric feels airy and unrestrictive, and the shorts don't require much adjustment once you're moving. They transition well between short runs, gym sessions, walks, and everyday activities. Because they've been a staple in Under Armour's lineup for years, they're easy to find in a variety of colors and sizes. Their consistency makes them a reliable “grab-and-go” option.

These days, we don't necessarily reach for the Fly By shorts every day. But on comfortable Saturdays around the house, when a long dog walk, some gardening, and a run down to the park might take place, these shorts are a suitable option for getting the job done.

Dislikes

While they perform adequately, the Fly By shorts don't offer many of the thoughtful features found in higher-end options, which makes sense considering their lower price. The Fly By blurs the line between a general workout short and a true distance-running short. They're versatile and functional, but serious runners may eventually outgrow them as their training demands increase.

The liner, waistband, and overall fit work well for shorter efforts, but they can become more noticeable as the miles add up. Runners training for half marathons or marathons, or spending hours on the trail, may crave a more refined feel. The fabric wicks sweat reasonably well, but it doesn't dry as quickly or feel as cool under heavy effort as more performance-oriented shorts. In hot weather, they can start to feel damp sooner than their technical counterparts.

While the lone pocket on the Fly By shorts is large enough to stash more than one small item, it isn't the easiest to access or the most ergonomically placed.   Credit: Ally Arcuri

Pocket space is minimal and not especially practical for carrying essentials. This can be frustrating for runners who prefer to keep their gear on their person.

Should You Buy the Under Armour Fly By?

If you're just getting into running, this is a friendly, no-pressure place to start. The Fly By shorts are affordable, simple, and get the job done without asking you to think too hard about fabrics, features, or technical specs. These Under Armour shorts have withstood the test of time, and we are full of nostalgia for the early days of lacing up shoes, strapping on an old iPod Nano, and figuring out what running is all about. There's something kind of nostalgic and reassuring about reliving those memories in these shorts. That said, if you start logging more miles or find yourself wanting more comfort, better pocketing, or a bit more polish on longer runs, you may eventually outgrow it in favor of something more technical and supportive. Think of the Fly By shorts as a dependable entry-level option: a great introduction to running gear, but not necessarily the shorts you'll still be reaching for when you're deep into distance training.

What Other Running Shirts Should You Consider?

Most notably, the Brooks Dash and the Nike Tempo are similar to the tried-and-true Fly By. All three pairs of running shorts are well-lined with a classic running short feel that can help you grow into the runner you are ready to become. If you are interested in a softer, more technical running short, we highly recommend the soft and reliable Oiselle Roga. The Roga costs a bit more, but it is the kind of short that will help you find your legs and carry you through that race you've been eyeing.
