Our Analysis and Test Results
The Columbia Switchback IV is a full-zip windbreaker with an optional and easily stowable hood. With two spacious, zippered hand pockets-one doubling as a self-stowing pouch — this jacket is exceptionally convenient to pack and carry. Made with 100% nylon, it also includes Omni-Shield, a stain and water-repellent coating.
Wind Resistance
The Switchback IV offers great adjustability based on your exposure to the elements. Velcro adjustable cuffs offer flexibility in keeping your hands and wrists protected or offering a roomier, looser fit. We found the hood's partially elastic brim limited its adjustability, making it less secure in high winds than other jackets. A full-length internal storm flap behind the zipper, as well as a drawcord on the hem, help this model be an overall reliable pick on a windy day.
This jacket has a regular length with an easily adjustable hem that cinches from one side. We found the fit to be roomy enough for layering underneath, should the temperatures drop, but overall, the wind resistance is quite impressive.
Breathability
The Switchback IV is made with 100% nylon, coated with Omni-Shield — a stain and water-repellent. While these features hold up great against wind, they do not offer much breathability. We noticed the jacket became noticeably wet to the touch on the inside during high-output activity. It dries rapidly when removed and either hung up or attached to a backpack during activity.
The cuffs on the Switchback IV have a wide range of adjustability with a velcro closure. We found that when the cuffs were fully open, they offered some additional airflow through the sleeves and allowed heat to vent down the cuff. With the adjustable velcro, they were also able to secure around the smallest of wrists, which came in handy during outings with cooler temps and high wind.
Versatility
The Switchback IV offers a relaxed fit with flattering darting at the waist to give it some shape. We found that there was room to layer when using the jacket in colder temperatures, but it didn't look overly bulky on its own when worn with a lightweight T-shirt. While the length isn't as long as some of the other jackets we tested, it still provided ample coverage for most activities. The two zippered hand pockets are roomy enough to fit a smartphone, wallet, and keys — making this a great pick for everyday errands. While other lightweight jackets in our lineup can be quite sheer, this jacket provides solid opacity, giving it a more versatile, street-friendly look.
The stowable hood was quick and convenient to pull out while in motion. It folds easily and tucks neatly into the collar with Velcro closures around the collar to pack it away when not in use. Although the hood's fit and adjustment system isn't ideal for strong winds, it provides decent coverage in light rain.
Packability
We loved the ease and convenience of packing the Switchback IV into its own hand pocket. Discreetly labeled “Packable”, the left side zippered hand pocket features a double pull zipper and a roomy pocket that easily turns into a storage pouch for the jacket. Once stowed, a simple loop on the corner easily lets you clip to your bag. Weighing in at 8.0 ounces for a women's size large, this was one of the heavier jackets in the testing lineup. Even so, it stowed away compactly and didn't crowd our packs, making it a practical option to have on hand.
While this jacket is on the heavier side compared to others, when worn, the added weight didn't affect comfort or ease of movement during casual activities like safari drives, hiking, and biking. It performed well without feeling cumbersome, making it a solid choice for those who prioritize comfort and affordability over ultra-lightweight gear.
Water Resistance
Although windbreakers are primarily designed to shield you from the wind, having some water resistance is always a welcome extra. We were impressed by how well the Switchback IV held up in rainy conditions, ranking second in our lineup for water resistance. Its durable fabric and quality construction make it a reliable choice for unpredictable weather.
Water noticeably beaded on the Omni-Shield coating when exposed to wet conditions. This coating also doubles as a stain repellent. We put this to the test—rubbing the jacket with patchouli oil to ward off tsetse flies in East Africa — with no oil spots in sight.
Should You Buy the Columbia Switchback IV?
The Switchback IV delivers impressive value, offering excellent wind resistance, a comfortable and adaptable fit, and convenient packability — all at a budget-friendly price. Though it's among the most affordable jackets we reviewed, it checks nearly every box for a casual windbreaker. It may not be the lightest or most technical option, but for everyday use and versatile styling, it stands out as an excellent value jacket.
What Other Windbreakers Should You Consider?
Whether you're heading out for a cold hike, a breezy day of errands, or looking for a packable travel windbreaker, the Switchback IV delivers reliable performance with great wind resistance and easy packability. Though not the most breathable jacket, it remains a solid choice for low-output endeavors. If you want a jacket with a little more urban style, the Fjallraven High Coast's waxed cotton and tailored fit might be more up your alley — though it costs substantially more.
