Our Analysis and Test Results
The Sanuk Yoga Mat II truly feels like you are standing on a soft and squishy yoga mat all day long. The footbed molds to your feet instantly, while the wide straps are soft and cushioned against the tops of your feet. It comes at an affordable price and looks stylish with a variety of outfits.
Comfort
The Sanuk Yoga Mat II is comfortable right off the bat. There is zero break-in period, and your feet will feel happy immediately. The footbed is extremely soft, while the yoga mat material it is made out of will mold to your foot immediately. The straps feel silky smooth against the tops of your feet, and you will barely notice the toe post.
These flip flops are extremely lightweight, making them easy to wear all day. After wearing them on long walks, our testers almost forgot they had shoes on at all.
The one drawback comfort-wise with these flip flops is that they absorb water when they get wet. This makes the straps slightly less comfortable, but not so much that it will be an issue.
Traction
These flip flops didn't exactly inspire confidence while walking on unstable terrain, but they weren't terrible either. One of our testers spent a significant amount of time walking around rivers in these flip flops. She noted, “On wet rocks, my feet slipped a little and I wasn't as confident as I was with some of the other pairs I tested.” That being said, she wasn't completely disappointed in them.
While testing these flip flops on a dirt hill with lots of loose gravel, the same tester said they performed fine. She wasn't impressed but also wasn't disappointed, especially considering how lightweight the flip flops are. The shoes stuck to the gravel when the hill wasn't super steep, but struggled a bit when the slope aspect gained gradient. It would be tricky to make a flip flop this light with better traction than the Sanuk provides.
Support
The footbed of the Sanuk Yoga Mat II is very squishy, which makes for a comfortable experience, but not exactly a supportive one. The yoga mat material compresses down under the weight of your foot, which means it lacks the support you might see if it were made with a more solid material. These flip flops lack arch support and protection from rocks and sticks.
One of our testers noted that her back and feet felt pretty good after walking around in them all day; however, this tester has notoriously flat feet and doesn't require a lot of arch support. The comfortable nature of the yoga mat material is wonderful if your feet don't require much arch support, but might be lacking in support if you have high arches.
Style
While style can be a fairly tricky category to judge, as everyone has their own opinion of what is fashionable, we do think these flip flops are a stylish option for most outfits and casual occasions. They come in a wide variety of colors, with options like pink, aqua, red, white, and even sage. Plus, the inside of the straps have a fun design that adds a nice detail to a simple flip flop.
One thing we feel the need to note is that when we tested the Aqua color of this flip flop, the inside of the strap began white with an aqua design, but unfortunately quickly became brown from walking around on trails and dirt roads. This is just something to note if you are deciding between different color options and you are someone who tends to do a lot of walking around on dirt trails or muddy river banks.
Versatility
Given the low price tag of these flip flops, we actually think they are quite versatile. They go with nearly any casual outfit, and can even be dressed up with a fun summer dress. They can also work in water or out of water, though they do absorb some water and take some extra time to dry.
These aren't going to be your go-to flip flop for rugged days out on trails, but if you want something comfortable to wear out to dinner after, strolling around town, on a dog walk, or at the beach with your friends, these flip flops will perform amazingly.
Should You Buy the Sanuk Yoga Mat II?
If you are looking for a comfortable, affordable flip flop that is still stylish, especially given the price tag, these are a great option. They are simple, but they get the job done. However, if your feet require a hefty amount of arch support, you might want to take a look at something else.
