Our Analysis and Test Results
Weather Protection
When we hear the name Xtratuf, we think rugged, dependable boots for whatever the weather can throw at us. The Ankle Deck Boot continues that legacy but in a smaller form factor. With a flood height of five and a half inches, it's about standard for a deck boot. While this doesn't hold a candle to its taller cousins, the Ankle Deck Boot is perfect for wading in shallower waters or less inclement conditions. We found it perfect for muddy walks, wet surfaces, shallow puddles, rainy commutes, and yard work. We've worn it in slush, mud, and even mid-winter snow where it kept our feet dry regardless of the conditions.
When the water is below flood height, the Ankle Deck Boot provides complete waterproof protection. If it's rainy out and we are planning on spending any amount of time outdoors, we frequently count on the Ankle Deck Boot to keep us dry. Scenarios where you might miss having calf-height protection include wading in deeper streams and ponds, making your way through damp brush while birding or hunting, or if you want somewhere to tuck your pants to keep the hem from dragging on the wet sidewalk.
Comfort
The Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot is surprisingly comfortable for a rubber boot, especially for everyday wet-weather use. With an insole that feels more like that of a casual shoe, we had no problem wearing these boots all day long. The moderately cushioned insole provides decent support, and the proprietary XPRESSCOOL antimicrobial, moisture-wicking liner helps keep feet dry and stink low. The deck boot design keeps the weight and bulk down compared to full-size rubber boots. Weighing 2.5 pounds a pair, they are reasonably light, half as much as our heaviest boots.
We were comfortable wearing these during our one-mile walking test. We noticed the smallest amount of heel slip, but not enough to cause blisters or hot spots. They are comfortable to stand in for long periods of time on hard surfaces like boat decks and concrete floors. The only challenge to their comfort comes from their relatively snug sizing. While we ordered true to our usual size, they are noticeably tight in the toes, particularly with a thicker sock. Like most rain boots, these are not offered in half sizes, so there is less fine tuning available should you need to adjust the fit. Ultimately, bumping up a size could help open up some room and improve comfort further, especially if you plan to wear these with thick socks in cooler weather.
Wearability
The Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot is a top choice for versatility and something we were able to wear on a near-daily basis, thanks to its lower height and ability to blend into multiple settings. The 6-inch height works well for everything from rainy commutes and muddy walks to yard work, fishing, and casual everyday wear. Sometimes, all of these in one day! Unlike taller rubber boots that can feel cumbersome and more work-focused, the Ankle Deck Boot is easy to pair with a casual outfit and comfortable enough to wear while kicking around town.
They are able to be slipped on hands-free and come equipped with pull tabs at the front and back. The boots flexed moderately easily during our hand flex test, meaning that they offer a natural gait without clomping, but still have reasonable support. These have been our go-to do-everything boot for years, and continue to earn high marks for their wearability in a variety of settings.
Traction
The Xtratuf 6" Ankle Deck Boot is designed to provide slip-proof traction on wet and smooth surfaces. It did the best on smooth surfaces like wet pavement, wooden decks, or even smooth river stones. The chevron-shaped lugs offer good grip on these surfaces and have a wide surface area for prioritizing contact on smooth surfaces. The outsole also has the added benefit of being mark-proof, keeping the decks of your boat (or your kitchen floor) in pristine condition.
However, the Xtratuf Deck Boot's traction starts to suffer on deeper, looser surfaces. We found ourselves slipping more often on steep, muddy river banks, and snow and ice proved a particular challenge. The lugs lack the depth and spacing found in more soft-ground-oriented boots. Knowing these boots' limits, they offer great traction for the scenarios that they are designed for.
Durability
Long renowned for its durability, Xtratuf stays true to its name with the Ankle Deck Boot. We took sanding paper to the toe flex point of these boots, and after a full minute, it exhibited only minor surface scuffing and discoloration with no penetration of the material. These held up in our real-world testing as well. After personally owning a pair of these boots and wearing them for years, we can say they hold up to heavy and consistent use. The only failure we've seen was cracking in the toe flex point after two years. The rubber rand does become heavily marked with time, but that has had no impact on the functionality of the boots. If you're looking for one pair of boots that will last for years, look no further than these.
Should You Buy the XTRATUF 6" Ankle Deck Boot?
The Xtratuf 6" Ankle Deck Boot is a highly versatile model from a highly regarded brand. If you're someone who prioritizes durability and wet weather performance, but still wants a boot that can blend into town wear, these are an excellent choice. Their relatively low height makes them a less strong contender for working in deep water and more inclement conditions, and the slightly pinched toe box might not work for wider feet unless you're ready to size up. Despite these small drawbacks, the Ankle Deck Boot is a compelling option for anyone wanting a highly capable boot that excels across multiple settings and conditions.
What Other Rain Boots Should You Consider?
Another legacy brand with roots in the fishing industry, Grunden has made an excellent boot in the Grundens Deviation Ankle Boot. Similar in many ways to the Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot, the Deviation features a more robust tread pattern for grip in soft terrain and a slightly beefier midsole. While it doesn't quite have the versatility or everyday wearability of the Xtratufs, it's perfect for the work-focused user looking for another high-performance product.
