Our Analysis and Test Results
The Bogs Classic Seamless Tall rain boot has incredible weather protection, an extremely durable build, and will keep your feet toasty warm when temps drop from late fall to early spring. The rubber surrounding your foot is quite sturdy and will not only protect your feet from rain and water, but will also do a great job protecting your feet from rocks, sticks, and anything else you may encounter on a day working outside. The neoprene uppers counter this sturdy base with a very flexible shaft which feels soft against the legs, and is supple enough to move with you while you work. The combination of the sturdy, grippy base with the flexible, comfortable upper makes these rain boots our go-to for cold weather.
Weather Protection
It is truly hard to beat the weather protection provided by the Bogs Classic boots. The lower portion is made from seamless rubber, and it is quite rigid and well insulated, which not only keeps out rain and water, but also does a great job protecting the feet from snow and ice, if needed.
The rubber, while incredibly durable, would probably feel too rigid if it continued up to the full calf height. Bogs saw this coming, and instead made the upper portion out of their waterproof 5.5mm Neo-Tech neoprene, which is still 100% waterproof, but also flexible enough to move with your legs as you walk and work. This makes the boots extremely comfortable - even if you're wearing them all day. Our lead tester has had an older version of these boots for over five years and has zero complaints regarding weather protection or waterproofness. She wears them as her primary cold-weather rain boot in the spring and fall, as well as her primary snow boot, all winter long.
The only weak point of these boots is the cutout grab handles in the upper neoprene. While they make the boots extremely easy to pull on over a pair of thick pants, they do lower the flood height by several inches. That being said, our testers rarely find themselves in situations where they require a flood height greater than 11 inches, which is what the Bogs provide. As long as you don't take a whoopsies step into a knee-deep section of the creek, these boots will keep your feet warm and dry.
Comfort
The Bogs Classic Seamless Tall provide all-day comfort. The fit is a bit looser on the feet, which allows for bigger socks, but also provides a roomier feel, which keeps your feet comfortable when standing and working all day. They lack arch support - as most rain boots do - but if you get the sizing right, they have room for an arch insert, if needed. Our lead tester has been wearing a version of these boots for the past five years, and she raves about how comfortable they are. This newest version has extra material inside the boot at the achilles, which is meant to help keep your heel in place while walking so you don't end with heel blisters. We unfortunately found that it also ended up pulling our socks down. We were able to mitigate this by wearing long socks that went up to mid calf, where with other boots we could get away with normal crew socks.
These boots are warm, cozy, and have never given us hot spots. We have worn them in rain storms, while commuting to work, doing garden chores, shoveling snow, and even hiking. We were highly impressed with the comfort in all those situations. The one drawback is that the rubber, while extremely durable, can feel a bit bulky and heavy. 1.5 lbs per foot adds up quick if you're walking long distances.
Traction
Turn these boots upside-down, and you'll immediately notice the giant, rugged lugs on the sole. The rubber is solid, the pattern is grippy, and the lugs are strong. In our testing, these boots excelled in mucky, muddy environments. The intensive pattern of the tread seems to dig into mud and hold on tight, keeping your footing stable. They also did very well in snow and on ice - hence why we think this boot is a great winter crossover boot. It has the warmth of a winter boot AND the traction of one.
The Bogs don't do quite as well on slick wet rocks. The thickness of the sole lacks sensitivity, and when walking through rivers and lakes, it was tough to feel where our feet were on the rocks. We couldn't feel the unique textures of each rock we stepped on, and thus our personal proprioception of where our feet were in relation to the rocks was slightly misaligned. We experienced our feet slipping around on the wet rocks multiple times. Luckily, the rugged exterior rubber on the lower portion of these boots protected our toes from being jammed into the rocks we ran into, and we didn't get any bruising or sore spots because our feet were so well protected.
Wearability
The Bogs Classic may do a lot of things, but one thing it can't do is replace your favorite sneakers as daily footwear. These boots have a decidedly chore and work-boot aesthetic. They are big, bulky, and only come in black; they are unlikely to simply disappear into your wardrobe. The Bogs also fit and feel a bit bulky for wearing around town; they are not at all light and nimble like some of the ankle boots we tested.
On the flip side, t Bogs are surprisingly easy to slip on and off if you need to make a mad dash through the yard to roll up your car windows after the rain starts pouring down. The grab handles at the tops of the boots make them so incredibly easy to put on. They are also easy to take off without using your hands thanks to a small triangle-shaped tab on the heel of each boot that allows you to kick off the boot with the toe of your other foot. We loved this feature when our boots were covered in mud, and we didn't want to get our hands dirty.
Durability
Our lead tester has been using an older version of this boot for over five years, and she raves about the fact that they are in truly great shape still. Bogs has updated the boots over the years, including the traction, but the durability of their boots has only improved in our experience. We put these boots to the ultimate test of durability, including hiking uphill on unstable, rocky talus, on muddy hillsides, and through slick creeks. When we finished, we honestly probably could have dusted off the boots and passed them off as nearly brand new. The traction showed very little wear and tear, the neoprene still looked brand new, and there were very few scuffs on the surface of the rubber.
These boots are burly. The rubber is sturdy, the neoprene is thick, and the construction is bombproof. We have been testing a wide variety of Bogs waterproof boots for many years, and have never once experienced a leak. While they come with somewhat of a hefty price tag, we think the cost is worth it. They will last you for years, if not a decade or more.
Should You Buy the Bogs Classic Seamless Tall?
If you live and work in a cold climate, where you need a boot that will keep your feet 100% warm and dry, the Bogs Classic Seamless Tall are an incredible option. They're especially nice if you aren't sure what the weather will bring, and you need something that could work in sleet and snow, as well as rain.
If you live in an urban environment and style and convenience are big factors in your decision-making, these probably won't be high on your list. Similarly, if you live in a warmer climate, these are not for you.
What Other Rain Boots Should You Consider?
If you like the idea of having maximum weather protection, but don't want the added insulation, you might want to check out the XTRATUF Legacy 15". They also have better traction on smooth, slick surfaces than the Bogs. If you like a tall, fully waterproof boot, but want something that doesn't scream “I work on a farm!” the Hunter Back Adjustable Tall is a classic option.
