Our Verdict

The Asics Gel Contend 9 is one of the better entry-level running shoes on the market for newer runners, walkers, gym-goers, or anyone who wants a reliable shoe without spending over $100 on premium foams. Weighing in at 7.18 ounces for a women's size 6.5 shoe, the Asics Gel-Contend 9 is a traditional 8 mm drop shoe that feels streamlined underfoot. While it really isn't the burliest or most technically advanced trainer out there, its features come together to create a petite-feeling running shoe that our testers are happy to recommend. The cushioning is modest, the ride is fairly simple, and experienced runners may outgrow it quickly for longer mileage or faster efforts. Still, for budget-conscious rookies, the Contend punches well above its price point.

Comfort and Fit

As we unboxed the Asics Gel-Contend 9, it was clear that, while it offers a typical Asics shape and style, it is a daintier shoe. We were intrigued, since we hoped that its countenance would make the shoe feel light and nimble underfoot. Thinner and narrower feeling than some, the Contend does, in fact, feel light and agile underfoot, though it isn't the most cushioned option out there.

The Gel-Contend 9 offers step-in comfort and feels true to size. The comfort features aren't robust, which is part of what allows this shoe to feel as streamlined as it does. If you have tried other Asics shoes and found them to be too cushy or thick/wide in any way, the Contend would be a great option to consider for a smoother fit. Asics uses an engineered mesh upper that stretches naturally with the foot, while synthetic overlays help maintain midfoot structure. The result is a shoe that feels approachable and easy right out of the box, especially for runners who are not interested in an overly aggressive or performance-focused fit.

Cushioning

The Contend 9 isn't a plush shoe, but it offers enough cushion to feel comfortable, especially given its price point. In our experience, shoes at this price tend to have scant or cheap-feeling cushioning, which isn't the case here.

Underfoot, the ride feels consistent and stable rather than exciting. Shock absorption is decent for short runs, walks, gym sessions, and everyday use, but energy return is limited compared to modern, high-end foams. The Contend protects the legs adequately without delivering much bounce or spring, which is perfectly fine for beginners building mileage slowly, but heavier runners or runners tackling longer distances may eventually crave more cushioning depth and responsiveness.

Breathability

For an affordable shoe, the Contend 9's breathability is surprisingly solid. The engineered mesh upper allows decent airflow throughout the forefoot and midfoot, and the shoe avoids the overly padded swampiness that many budget trainers develop.

That said, the Contend 9 still has an entry-level upper. The mesh is not especially thin or premium, and the added overlays slightly reduce airflow compared to lightweight performance trainers designed to feel breezy. In everyday use, though, the Contend 9 remains comfortable enough for warm-weather walking, treadmill runs, and gym sessions without becoming soggy after an hour.

Traction

The outsole is one of the more underrated parts of the Gel-Contend 9. Asics uses a durable rubber layout with generous ground coverage in high-impact zones, helping the shoe feel secure and long-lasting on pavement.

On dry roads, treadmills, and gym floors, the shoe feels dependable and stable. Wet conditions reveal the limits of the budget-oriented rubber compound, however. Independent testing found the grip to be adequate rather than confidence-inspiring on slick pavement. In other words: perfectly fine for most casual runners, but not the shoe you would choose for aggressive cornering or rainy speed sessions. Again, the traction scores higher than that of most shoes available at this price point.

Should You Buy the Asics Gel-Contend 9?

If you are on the hunt for a budget trainer to get you through simple runs and gym sessions, the Asics Gel-Contend 9 is a no-brainer recommendation. We rarely find shoes that perform as well as this one for the price. The Contend isn't a shoe we recommend for runners looking to up the ante on their training or dive into more serious runs. But casual runners seeking a daily shoe at a fraction of the price of premium options should check this one out first.

What Other Road Running Shoes Should You Consider?

Most of the other road-running shoes we tested cost about twice as much as the Contend. Our previous Best Buy award winner, the Hoka Mach 7, is a good place to start if you are looking for a higher-caliber shoe with solid versatility. The Brooks Glycerin 23 offers all-day wearability and comfort in a more durable, traditional-feeling package than the Contend. If an all-around running shoe is what you're looking for because you know you won't wear it during errands and day-to-day activities, the Asics Novablast 5 offers comfort, responsiveness, and durability primed to keep road runners of all abilities levels thriving on the pavement.
