Our Analysis and Test Results
The new On Cloudsurfer 2 smooths out a few flaws with added stability and comfort, but its squishy platform and dull ride make it better suited for casual strolls than serious miles.

Cushioning
Central to the underfoot feel of the Cloudsurfer 2 is the Helion foam midsole, paired with CloudTec pods. This combination delivers a firmer, more stable ride compared to the previous iteration. This combination also simply feels pretty compressive and dead underfoot. It's soft enough, leading to overall comfort but it doesn't feel like a well-cushioned running shoe after a few miles. I found the cushioning of the Cloudsurfer 2 to be flat and uninspiring — firmer than expected, and likely disappointing for runners who enjoyed the softer ride of the previous version.
Upper Comfort
The upper of the On Cloudsurfer 2 features a poorly designed engineered mesh. The design includes an overstuffed tongue and embroidered details perfect for rubbing hotspots. The tongue doesn't lie flat during runs, adding extra discomfort to the upper's overall fit. The lockdown is solid, but lacks the comfort and flexibility that uppers made of higher-grade fiber offer. The fit of the upper is fairly standard, and I didn't have any issues with the shape, volume, or the toe box.
Stability
This is where I perceived the biggest actual upgrades when it comes to the On Cloudsurfer 2. The previous iteration of the Cloudsurfer lacked solid engineering, and while On has made meaningful improvements in version 2, the lightweight textiles still feel flimsy and don't provide the structural support many runners rely on.
It's stable enough for a day of walking around Disneyland (or walk-jogging away from the horror that is Space Mountain) or navigating the aisles of Costco, but for those looking to log serious miles, a shoe with more deliberate mechanical design would be the better choice.
Responsiveness
The Cloudsurfer 2 offers a semi-smooth, rockered ride facilitated by its CloudTec geometry. This design promotes a more efficient heel-to-toe transition, making it suitable for easy-paced runs and daily training. However, the shoe's firmer midsole and lack of energy return make it a less-than-ideal training choice. Runners seeking a more responsive experience for speedwork should consider alternative models.
Weight
We weighed each women's size 6.5 Cloudsurfer 2 shoe at 6.93 ounces. This is mildly heavier than the previous version, likely due to the increased outsole width. The weight is about as basic as the rest of this shoe. It is not especially heavy or remarkably light. Instead, the weight of the Cloudsurfer falls in the middle of the pack, which is perfectly acceptable for a daily trainer.
Traction
The outsole of the On Cloudsurfer has been reengineered with computer-optimized geometry, featuring segmented rubber placements in high-wear areas such as the lateral forefoot and heel. This design updates the shoe's durability and offers pretty solid traction. I'll bypass this shoe on most running occasions, though its traction makes it more suitable than some in cases of inclement weather.
Should You Buy the On Cloudsurfer 2?
The On Cloudsurfer 2 is a fine shoe for people who want a comfortable-enough walking shoe that looks the part. I struggle to categorize this shoe as a running shoe simply because I do not recommend it for running. I have an ever-expanding list of running shoes that can be purchased for near-similar — or even lower — prices that host a slew of more well-equipped features for miles spent pounding pavement.
What Other Road Running Shoes Should You Consider?
Newer runners seeking a shoe heavy on reliability and no-frills comfort should check out the Saucony Ride 18. The Ride 18 offers a versatile balance of comfort and stability, and is available for a slightly lower price than the Cloudsurfer 2. The New Balance Fresh Foam X More v5 is a powerfully cushioned choice that, while a bit heavy, offers stronger running prowess than the Cloudsurfer. The Asics Novablast 5 is a comfortable, affordable, and versatile option that makes running feel fun and bouncy, unlike the slogging sensation facilitated by the On Cloudsurfer 2.
