Our Verdict

The Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed is a sandal that once you try it, you have a hard time replacing choosing another brand. Known for their design and comfort, these sandals combine a leather upper with a suede-lined, cork-contoured footbed with a latex foam cushion that creates a custom fit over time. The EVA sole provides additional cushioning and shock absorption and delivers good grip on most surfaces. These stylish sandals are versatile enough to transition from running errands to a casual walk on the trails, but they aren't designed for adventuring and regular water use.

Our Analysis and Test Results

birkenstock arizona soft footbed
The Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed is a classic sandal that has gained quite the following since being introduced in 1973. These sandals feature an oiled leather upper, dual adjustable straps, and metal buckles for added durability. These sandals are available in two widths, medium/narrow and regular/wide, and men's size 6 through 17.5, depending on the color of choice.

Comfort

The Arizona Soft Footbed is my first pair of Birkenstock sandals but I have enjoyed their clogs for years while working in the hospital. Typically wearing sandals on any warm day from March through October, I regret not having purchased a pair of these earlier. Birkenstocks are known for their comfort and custom fit, and this version of the Arizona takes it one step further. The Arizona Soft Footbed has added a foam cushion to the classic design, making the typical Birkenstock break-in period almost unnoticeable. These sandals were very comfortable out of the box and immediately provided the orthopedic support and feel that people love. On the first day, I wore these from early morning, heading to the gym, to late at night, working in the garage, and have zero complaints about the feel.

The cork molds to your foot, creating a nice, even pressure as it fills in all the voids and even conforms to your toes. This additional contact improves traction between the sole of the foot and the footbed, preventing slippage with use. Speaking of the footbed, Birkenstock uses a suede lining that is soft on the bottom of my feet and doesn't get sweaty when I wear them on hot, humid days. The suede prevents foot slide that can occur with the foam or rubber footbeds found on some sandals.

When it comes to all-day comfort and cushioning, the Arizona does not disappoint. These sandals won't pack out and fail, as you find with some other brands. In fact, expect these sandals to develop a unique shape to your feet over time, making them more supportive. These sandals quickly became the go-to choice for almost any activity outside the house, from running errands to walking the dog to meeting friends for dinner. Even walking around the lake or trails at the park isn't out of the question, as these provide great support similar to a shoe.

Versatlity & Style

These Arizona transitions easily from one adventure to the next and are perfect for all-day use. I slip them on when running errands, then go to the gym, and wear them to work before changing into my hospital shoes. If I didn't have to wear closed-toe shoes in the hospital, I would wear them at work also. I love the ability to slip them on and off when I forget something in the car or go get the mail; the efficiency and comfort are unmatched.

Since they are made of leather, these sandals aren't ideal for prolonged submersion in water. If they are subjected to wet conditions, make sure to let them dry out and then give them some love with a good conditioner. The same goes for a hot environment or prolonged sun exposure, which can dry them out. If they see regular use in those situations, a leather treatment is a must to prolong their lifespan.

A classic design, these sandals are pleasing to the eye and don't put off a strong granola vibe. The leather and suede can be worn with khakis or shorts for casual occasions and look just as good with gym clothes or while running errands around town. These sandals seem to match just about every outfit and are a staple for traveling because they can be used for a variety of occasions. They are available in a variety of colors, which will all develop their own individual appearance as they age and wear in.

Adjustability

The Birkenstock Arizona features two wide straps on the forefoot with a simple buckle for adjustment. These sandals are so convenient because you just slide your foot in and be on your way, then kick them off when you get home.

Once the straps are adjusted on the Arizona, they rarely have to be changed. The straps did not stretch or deform and maintained a nice, snug grip on the foot. The straps' width prevents them from digging into the instep and maintains a stable pressure on the footbed. These sandals don't have a heel securement strap, but the fit is so good that it doesn't seem necessary for my needs.

Stability

Since the footbed conforms to the foot over time, it provides good support in any direction you move. The deep heel cup keeps the foot stable, and the straps prevent the forefoot from sliding laterally out of the sides. The arch forms comfortably to your foot, providing constant orthopedic support when walking, and allows for natural foot splay and even pressure across the bones. Our tester notes, “I have flatter arches and spend a lot of time barefoot, but the support from these sandals is a welcome change.”

The footbed features raised areas to separate the toes, creating their own indentations and adding grip and stability when ascending or descending hills. One noteworthy aspect of these sandals is the suede footbed and the stability it provides. Many slide-style sandals allow your foot to move around, especially when wet or sweaty. Arizona has a suede footbed that grips without the slip-and-slide feel of rubber.

Traction

The Arizona's don't have the best traction, but it works well for casual surfaces like boardwalks and grassy parks. It does ok on gravel paths, but the EVA outsole does more to absorb the impact of protruding rocks than it does to grip onto them.

The wishbone-shaped tread is relatively light, but for most places you'll want to wear your Birks, it's plenty grippy. We don't recommend taking these off-road more than necessary, and definitely wouldn't take them on a hike.

Should You Buy the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed?

If you haven't worn a pair of Birkenstocks, you might be wondering whether they are just a fad or a status symbol, and the answer is no. These sandals have remained relatively unchanged for 50 years, and for good reason; they just simply work. The cork footbed contours and supports each part of the foot, creating a custom fit and feel over time. While some orthopedic footwear can be distasteful, these sandals are as appealing as they are versatile. Slip them on to take out the trash, wear them to the spin class, and then head to a late dinner with friends or catch a flight without having to swap footwear. It may seem silly, but the convenience of these sandals is a big bonus.

What Other Sandals Should You Consider?

The Arizona Soft Footbed has a lot to like and more, but it doesn't fit every need you may have for a sandal. If you enjoy fishing and water, the Keen Newport H2 or Chaco Z/2 Classic are a much better choice for a water-friendly or aggressive terrain sandal.
