Our Verdict

The Chaco Z/2 Classic is one of the sturdiest sandals in the lineup, providing superior support and traction for any adventure. Known for their ruggedness and a favorite by many, these have been used for backpacking, navigating rivers, fishing, hiking, and casual use in urban environments. A multi-strap design adds necessary security and the aggressive tread prevents slipping and sliding on trails. The thick sole provides stability and support but adds significant weight compared to more streamlined models. If you are planning longer trips and need something to handle all the obstacles you may encounter, these are the sandals for you. See how they compare to the other options on the market top-rated sandals for men.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Chaco Z/2 Classic is designed to be one of the most capable adventure sandals and is sure to withstand the abuse of most summer expeditions. The polyester jacquard webbing provides a secure fit and is paired with a Luvseat PU midsole and a non-marking ChacoGrip sole featuring 3.5mm lugs. Weighing in at 30 ounces for men's size 10, these are one of the heavier models in our lineup, but it's too noticeable on the trails. Available only in medium-width and whole sizes, they offer subdued or vibrant color options to add a touch of flair.

Comfort

The Chaco Z/2 Classic is a well-thought-out design meant for extended use on rugged terrain. The Luvseat polyurethane midsole feels firm but supportive and is contoured to fit the anatomy of the foot. The ergonomic shape of these sandals offers ample arch support and is best suited for individuals with regular to high arches. Our testers with low arches or flat feet struggled with the arch support and felt the contours didn't match up well. The textured footbed isn't too aggressive and adds some slip protection when wet and dirty. Out of the box, these sandals don't require time to break in, but they do soften up slightly with use, resulting in an improved feel.

The Z/2 features soft polyester jacquard webbing that wraps around the foot and through the sole for a secure fit. Taking the time to adjust these sandals improves the comfort and fit, but it takes trial and error to get them dialed in. Having a loop that encircles the big toe helps with stability, and it adds to the overall comfort of the sandal. Some users report that the toe loop feels foreign and requires time to get used to. The noticeable weight of the sandals is due to the thick and supportive sole, which can feel quite stiff to new Chaco users. For longer hikes or when carrying additional weight, the support and stiffness provide extra comfort that your feet will appreciate.

A firm footbed and plenty of arch support are preferred for long term use.

Traction

The Chaco Z/2 Classic provided significant traction when put to the test. The non-marking ChacoGrip rubber sole features large 3.5mm lugs for no-slip traction that withstands use and abuse. Varying in size and shape, the lugs bite into the terrain at different angles, and larger channels between the lugs help expel debris and water that would otherwise clog the tread.

A diamond-patterned footbed, along with the toe loop, helps the foot stay in place and prevents slipping. We did notice some slippage of the foot when the sandals were wet, a phenomenon we experienced with all models tested.  The stiff sole doesn't allow your foot to mold around objects like the thinner options, but the stiffness and tread pattern provide sufficient grip.

Stability

When discussing stability and sandals, it's hard not to think of the Chaco Z/2 and all it has to offer. The contour of the footbed curves around the foot and gently turns upward at the edge to prevent sliding, and the wide sole has excellent lateral stability on slopes. Straps in the shape of a Z and a toe loop create a webbing that envelops the foot for securement. The Z/2 name refers to the Z-shaped straps, and the two refers to the toe loop. Some users don't like the toe loop; however, it provides significantly more stability when compared to the Z/1 or Z/Cloud models.

The heel strap is not adjustable, but two anchor points in front of the heel help keep the foot in place. The Z strap also secures these anchors and travels through the sole and around the foot. When you tighten the straps, they pull back into the heel strap for solid, secure footing. Some sliding occurs on inclines, which is limited by the toe and heel straps and noted to be less than that of other models in the lineup. The textured footbed helps limit foot slide, but can trap dirt and debris on the trail.

Adjustability

The strap system of the Chaco Z/2 may seem confusing and overwhelming to new users, but it adds to the comfort and stability of this model. As mentioned previously, a single strap crisscrosses from the heel, anchors around the foot and big toe, and through the sole of the sandal. Pulling on one side of the strap tightens the other side and vice versa. Adjusting the sandal typically begins with the arch side strap, followed by the toe loop, then the outer strap, and finally the instep, which is connected to the slider buckle.

The non-adjustable heel strap allows for slight movement depending on foot shape, but the Z strap does a phenomenal job of tightening things up. Adjusting these sandals can be a challenging process and is a common complaint among users when first trying a pair of Chacos. The adjustment process can be time-consuming; however, finding the right mix of tight and loose leads to a very stable and comfortable fit that is adjustable for different terrains.

Versatility

If you want a do-it-all sandal, the Chaco Z/2 Classic is the right choice for all your adventuring needs and has been used by multiple testers both in and out of the water. From rafting and river adventures to backpacking, hiking, sandy beaches, or running errands, these versatile sandals easily transition from one activity to the next.

A noticeable aspect of the Z/2 Classic is the thick sole, which some users find to be too chunky and firm for everyday use. Chaco does offer some of its models in a Cloud version, which features a softer footbed while still providing excellent support. No matter which model you choose, it is hard to ignore the functionality and versatility of these sandals and how much abuse they withstand. Available in a variety of colors and patterns, you can also customize almost every aspect, from strap color and pattern to footbed color and tread style, to create a unique and individual look.

Should You Buy the Chaco Z/2 Classic?

If you desire a supportive and robust sandal for long days of adventuring, the Chaco Z/2 Classic is for you. These versatile sandals have the necessary straps to stay in place and provide the required traction for crossing rugged terrain. Not ideal for those with low arches or flat feet, those with higher arches will appreciate the additional support for long days on their feet.

What Other Sandals Should You Consider?

For those wanting a Chaco with a softer footbed, the Chaco Z/Cloud offers a little more cushion. The Chaco Bodhi is also an excellent choice for urban or casual users who don't need an aggressive trail sandal but want to get out on the trails occasionally. A true minimalist sandal, the Xero H-Trail is a lightweight and flexible option that doesn't provide much support but easily packs away for travel.
