Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
The Chaco Bodhi is the less clunky and simplified version of the adventure sandal that we found to be more enjoyable than the burlier options. The adjustable webbing is made with recycled polyester and has an effective toe loop for a secure fit. The Luvseat midsole is specifically designed for the men's version and is paired with a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole featuring 3mm lugs for enhanced traction. Weighing in around 21 ounces per pair for men's size 10, these feel light and agile when stretching your legs. Only available in medium-width and no-half sizes, these sandals come in a variety of colors, ranging from vibrant to more subdued.
Comfort
The Chaco Bodhi features a similar firm footbed to other Chaco models, with a few notable differences that we prefer. On the initial exam, you notice the sole is not as thick and is easier to flex and twist. The arch support is not as robust as the Cloud options, but these have a more ergonomic and natural feel. The contour of the footbed is very enjoyable and adds support around the edge of the foot when on the trails. The soft webbing is flexible and contours to the shapes of the foot without rubbing or causing hotspots.
The Chaco Bodhi has out-of-the-box comfort and doesn't take a lot of time to break in. The footbed and straps are comfortable on first use and continue to soften with regular wear. Some struggle with the toe loop and finding the right level of adjustment, but we liked the simplified strap system and found it to be a very comfortable option to secure the foot. As stated previously, the Luvseat footbed doesn't have the stiffness and pronounced arch as the Cloud soles. We really enjoyed this footbed version for all-day use, but those who require more arch support or a firmer footbed may want to consider other options.
Traction
The Chaco Bodhi features a non-marking rubber sole with ChacoGrip compound optimized for enhanced traction on wet surfaces. The 3mm lug depth tread pattern features variable-sized, broad, flat blocks divided by thin channels for improved grip and water drainage. The far heel and toe area incorporate a horizontal tread pattern for additional stability and grip. The diamond pattern on the footbed provides grip for the bottom of your foot, and the toe loop helps keep the foot in place for a sure-footed feel in water or moving currents.
A significant difference between these sandals and other Chaco models is the aggressiveness of the tread pattern. On firm surfaces, these soles perform exceptionally well, providing the necessary confidence for inclines and slopes. The lower, blocky tread pattern struggles in loose and soft terrain, lacking the exact grip and digging ability of the more aggressive models we tested. The flexible sole allows your foot to mold around objects and gives a good feel of the terrain below.
Stability
Although it doesn't have as many straps as other models, the Chaco Bodhi is surprisingly stable. The footbed gently contours to the anatomy of the foot, and a wide sole feels stable on most surfaces. People may not love the toe loop and its feel, but it is the reason these sandals feel so secure and stable on rougher terrain. The minimalist strap design of these sandals offers surprising stability, which we enjoyed.
The heel strap does not have any adjustment, but two anchor points for the straps keep the heel securely in place on slopes. The footbed is raised on the sides of the foot and is contoured to prevent the foot from sliding sideways. A textured footbed provides grip for the foot but can collect debris, which is challenging to remove without taking off the sandal. There is minimal front-to-back sliding on inclines or descending hills, similar to what we experienced with other sandals.
Adjustability
Adjusting these sandals can be foreign to people who have not owned a pair of Chaco sandals before. A strap runs from the ankle area across the instep and around the big toe into the footbed. Loosening the instep strap allows the toe loop to become larger when putting on the sandals. Pulling on the strap first cinches the webbing around the big toe, then the slider on the outside of the foot secures the strap from the big toe to the outer ankle. Adjusting the tightness of the toe and foot strap independently creates a more customized fit.
The heel strap lacks an adjustment option, allowing for some heel movement depending on the foot shape. Tightening the front strap helps secure the foot, but it doesn't eliminate the heel slack. Having fewer straps makes for simpler adjustments compared to other Chaco models, but some people found the toe loop to be an annoyance. A single slider buckle on the outer strap moves easily and stays in place with prolonged use.
Versatility
The lower profile design of the Chaco Bodhi is suitable for lighter trails and urban use. The contoured footbed and simple straps make them comfortable enough for all-day use, running errands, heading to the beach, or dirt and gravel trails at local parks. We used these for fishing in local lakes, and they would also be a good option for paddleboarding.
These Chaco sandals don't have the thick, aggressive soles of the other models, so they may not be ideal for scrambling over rocks or forging your way on softer, less traveled trails. We preferred the footbed contour and cushion of these Chaco models over others and found them to have a more natural feel for our feet. Keep in mind that everyone's foot shape is different, so they may not be ideal if you have a high arch or need more impact absorption. Despite the flat tread blocks, we feel the Bodhi is a solid choice for the casual adventurer or someone who wants a well-rounded sandal without a lot of straps and extra weight.
Should You Buy the Chaco Bodhi?
If you are looking for a comfortable and capable sandal for everyday use and casual trails, the Chaco Bodhi is for you. A streamlined and contoured footbed provides the necessary support for all-day use, and the minimalist straps have a less aggressive appearance. Not ideal for rough terrain, these still perform admirably on most surfaces and are stable on inclines. It's not ideal for those with high arches or who want a more adaptable adventure sandal.
What Other Sandals Should You Consider?
The Bodhi is an excellent choice for urban or casual use, but comes up a little short of a true adventure sandal. If serious adventures are in your future, we recommend the Chaco Z/2 Classic for its thick, supportive sole and aggressive tread. The Bedrock Cairn Evo is another great adventure sandal for those seeking a lightweight and minimalist option, and it's a tester favorite.
