Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
The Keen Uneek features a unique two-cord weave forming a closed-toe upper that molds to the foot for a secure yet well-ventilated fit. Lightweight and flexible, it grips wet rocks and dirt trails well, dries quickly, and adapts to various foot shapes. The cord lacing and heel strip may take some initial fiddling, but the design is both comfortable and bold.
Comfort
The Uneek is comfortable right out of the box, and wears well during casual hikes and long creek walks in the desert. The braided, adaptive two-cord upper molds to the shape of our feet. Its lightweight, flexible construction felt responsive on the trail and provided enough stability for moderate hikes. The two-cord upper molds to the foot and provides a secure, ventilated fit without pinching. The heel cord adds stability without rubbing for most testers. Some found it fiddly to adjust the webbing at first or experienced minor pinching from the heel strap until the sandal broke in.
Once properly fitted, the heel strap and cord weave work together to keep the foot secure, making the sandal comfortable for daily wear.
The midsole is lightly cushioned and stable, offering moderate arch support that suits neutral feet, though those with high arches may not find it supportive enough to spend all day on their feet.
Versatility
The Uneek occupies a unique space between a performance sandal and a casual everyday shoe, which gives it a different kind of versatility than many of the sandals in our test. Rather than excelling in technical terrain, the Uneek is a stylish “jack-of-all-trades” for urban commutes, travel, camping, water sports, and casual hiking.
The two-cord upper design adapts well to a variety of foot shapes and allows the shoe to be worn comfortably with or without socks, which increases its usefulness across different climates and settings. The closed-toe design provides protection around camp and on rocky paths, making it more functional in outdoor environments than flip-flops or open sandals. We found that the shoe also packs relatively flat and tucks neatly into the smaller nooks and crannies of a suitcase. It would be a great choice as a secondary travel shoe that's still more substantial than a flip-flop.
While it can handle short hikes on established trails, it lacks the support and stability needed for longer hikes or carrying heavy loaded backpacks. The outsole provides adequate traction on dry surfaces and performed well while hiking for miles through creeks in the Southwest desert. On more slippery crossings, though, we wished for a little more traction. The cord upper also allows sand and small debris to enter the shoe, which we found uncomfortable on sandy paths, as it took a little more time to dislodge sediment. Where the Uneek stands out is in its crossover use. It transitions seamlessly from trailhead to town, performs well as a camp shoe, and is comfortable enough for long days of travel and walking on pavement.
Style
We received more compliments on this sandal than on any other hikeable model in our tests. The Uneek visually pops with a design that is both modern and playful. Its two-cord upper gives the sandal a distinctive, modern look that sets it apart from typical outdoor footwear, while the closed-toe construction adds a rugged, purposeful touch. Think granola but not geeky. Available in a variety of colorways, it looks polished enough for city streets or casual workwear, making it one of the few outdoor sandals that can double as everyday footwear without feeling out of place.
The Keen Uneek's weaving style is an open, two-cord braid. Unlike traditional woven sandals, it uses two adjustable cords that interlace over and under each other, creating a lattice-like pattern that conforms to the foot. The cords run horizontally across the forefoot and midfoot, looping around the heel to provide both flexibility and a secure fit. This style is minimalist yet structured, offering breathability, movement, and a distinctive, modern look.
Adjustability
As with the other KEEN models in our review, the Uneek performed fairly well for fit adjustments across the foot and in the midfoot. A bungee adjustment also makes the process quick and simple. However, without an ankle strap adjustment, some testers with wide ankles found the ankle strap uncomfortable and a bit tight, which slowed the process of putting the sandal on and taking it off.
The Uneek offers adjustability through its two-cord upper, top bungee, and heel cord, molding to various foot shapes. While it lacks a traditional ankle strap, the cords secure the foot and evenly distribute pressure. Most users find a snug, stable fit after some initial adjustment.
Stability
The Uneek's midsole is firm. It provides some shock absorption but feels less cushioned than some other sandals. Its rubber outsole grips surprisingly well on wet pavement, grass, and dirt trails. This makes it more than capable for nature walks around the local park, and even capable of light trails and stream crossings. The flexible sole offers responsive support on uneven terrain—almost like a minimalist gateway shoe, but with more stability.
We were most impressed by how the two-cord design wraps the foot evenly, which helps prevent side-to-side slippage. The heel cord adds security without rubbing for most users, keeping the foot locked in place, though first-time wearers may need to adjust it a few times. Once dialed in, the cord weave and heel strap work together to provide a secure, ventilated fit that balances stability and responsiveness to the terrain. Despite its firmness, the sole flexes with the foot, allowing for natural movement without feeling wobbly.
Traction
The Uneek features a multidirectional lug pattern on its rubber outsole. It grips dirt, rocks, and wet surfaces. The lugs are widely spaced to shed mud and water quickly. This helps maintain grip in wet conditions. The lugs are relatively short, so on very slick or steep surfaces, they can feel less confident; this isn't a replacement for your hiking boots by any means.
That said, we did some casual morning hikes through creeks along the winding canyons of the Grand Staircase of the Escalante and found the sandal comfortable and stable, with its flexible sole allowing natural foot movement over uneven rocks. That said, on slicker sections, the lugs felt a bit sparse, and extra traction would have improved confidence. Overall, it performs well for creek hikes and moderate trail use.
Should You Buy the Keen Uneek?
If you're looking for a sandal that can transition seamlessly from city streets to light trails or boat docks, the Keen Uneek is a strong choice with a modern aesthetic. Its unique braided cord design provides a secure, adaptable fit. The closed-toe construction provides protection for casual outdoor use, though it is not our favorite for sandy or pebbly hikes, as any closed-toe sandals can trap debris. It's lightweight, breathable, and comfortable for all-day wear, making it ideal for travel, camp, short hikes, and everyday summer use.
What Other Sandals Should You Consider?
For users looking for a single sandal for travel, casual wear, and light outdoor use, the Uneek is definitely one of the most attractive multi-purpose sandals. For more technical objectives, however, most users will be better served by a more supportive performance sandal like the Chaco Z/Cloud 2 or Bedrock Cairn Evo 3D Pro.
