Our Verdict

The Olukai Kīpe'a Slide is a versatile, stylish option for those seeking a comfortable everyday sandal. Its cushioned footbed and subtle arch support make it ideal for casual walks, errands, or even dressier outings, while the leather upper adds a polished look that pairs well with a variety of outfits. The slip-on design makes it convenient for casual walks or beach time (just keep it out of the water), and the premium materials feel long-lasting. Impressively, the Kīpe'a offers solid traction for a slide, giving confidence on varied surfaces. It's no hiker, that's for sure, but overall, it is a dressy-casual slide with reliable comfort that we enjoy wearing on a daily basis.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Olukai Kīpe'a Slide has a premium leather upper detailed with beautiful stitching, and a footbed imprinted with tasteful Hawaiian floral patterns. It features a soft full-grain leather upper, a contoured PU footbed with medium arch support, and a durable rubber outsole that provides traction on urban and light outdoor surfaces. Olukai provides a one-year warranty to back the quality construction of this slide.

The Kīpe'a Slide's full-grain leather upper is soft and supple, breaking in beautifully over time. It gives the sandal a premium feel while still staying casual and approachable. We love the small details, like the stitching on the upper bands and the embossed floral patterns on the footbed that elevate its overall look.

The design is understated but versatile. We wore them camping, at the pool, to nice dinners on the town, and on city adventures. Its minimalist silhouette keeps it from feeling flashy while still standing out for its Aloha craftsmanship. It's a sandal that balances style with functionality.

The slide feels secure on our foot and has more traction than most slides, making it a good option for casual commuting.   Credit: Kate Pitts

Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that a slide made in Hawaii offers excellent poolside traction. Its rubber sole uses a textured tread with strategic grooves, offering traction and stability unusual for a slip-on. Sidewalks, patios, and light trails all feel secure underfoot. We worry less about slipping in these slides, even on slightly wet surfaces like a wet dock or tile.

Slipping the Kīpe'a on and off is effortless, yet the fit feels secure. They are sized big for comfort, so you may consider ordering a size down if you want a tighter fit. The heel cup holds your foot in place without pressure. We enjoy airing our piggies with the full open-toe design.

Dislikes

The Kīpe'a is limited in what it can tackle compared to other sandals we've tested - think beach walks or strolling around town. Like most slip-ons, the open toe and heel leave your feet exposed. We would feel uneasy wearing these on anything remotely steep, even some of the paths down to our favorite secret beaches would be a no-go in these slides. Their best kept for casual, everyday wear rather than challenging terrain.

We loved it as a campground shoe to slip on and off around the tent, although we wore more aggressive sandals for hiking.   Credit: Kate Pitts

Like most slides, it lacks aggressive traction for truly slippery or uneven surfaces. While fine for sidewalks and patios, it's not built for hiking or wet outdoor conditions.

The price point is high relative to generic slides. While the materials and craftsmanship are excellent, some may see it as a splurge-only option. The leather upper is soft and premium, but it can get scratched or creased with wear, especially if used and abused on gritty paths. Again, the Olukai Kipe'a is a beach/city slide, and in these scenarios, we expect it to hold up beautifully.

Should You Buy the Olukai Kīpe'a Slide?

The Kīpe'a is a premium casual slide that excels in comfort, style, and everyday wearability. Its contoured PU footbed, supportive arch, and soft leather upper make it ideal for all-day walking, lounging, or dressing up. It is the classiest sandal in our lineup. However, it's not built for rugged terrain, wet conditions, or high-impact activities. Like with any slip-on or flippy floppy, an open-toe design leaves your piggies exposed to pebbles. That being said, its traction is above average for a slide, though still better suited for walking on trails and sidewalks than for hiking. The price is higher than that of generic slides, so it's a splurge for those who value comfort, elegant craftsmanship, and style over outdoor performance.

What Other Sandals Should You Consider?

If you value style and comfort but the Kīpe'a isn't quite right for you, there are a few other solid options. The Keen Uneek - Women's features a corded, open-weave design for greater versatility on light trails or for scrambling. If you want a slide but need more support, the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed offers a classic, durable leather footbed with firm arch support, making it the best slide for long-lasting comfort on days with lots of walking. For a softer, cushioned feel, the Cushionaire Luna Cork Footbed delivers plush underfoot support in a casual, everyday slide.
