Our Analysis and Test Results
The super comfortable UGG Ascot may rival most any other slipper for indoor use, with a soft suede top, very minimal bottom, and oodles of wool insulation found inside that will thaw even the coldest of feet. We loved how they looked and, more importantly, how they felt when worn. Just don't buy these if you're looking for a slipper that can live a double life outdoors. These are best kept indoors, as the outsole won't fully protect the upper from wear.
Comfort
Like the idea of walking on a cloud? That's the feeling we get when slipping on the Ugg Ascot and simply walking to the kitchen for our morning coffee. They have a soft, slightly brushed suede (ours dyed to a deep green!) replete with a wool liner over everything, including the footbed. These moccasin-style slippers beg you to stop walking on anything at all and put your feet up instead.
The fit is somewhat narrow, feeling slightly tight in the pinky toe area, although the heel feels proportionally normal and secure. Wider sizes are available (our lead tester has a normal “D” width) if you want a bit more room in the toebox. There is a rubber outsole, but its design is much narrower than the Ascot is wide, which gives the sensation of the upper wrapping farther around your foot than a normal shoe.
Insulation
Insulation is handled by a combination of materials: either upcycled wool or a combination of upcycled and Lyocell plant-based insulation depending on the production run – our pair didn't specify.
Regardless, we can attest that these slippers were among the warmest we've tested, matching short shearling and wool-lined slippers of similar weight. The beautiful suede assisted in keeping all the warm air trapped inside as well.
Our freezer test corroborated our in the field/on the couch tests, resulting in less temperature loss observed inside the foot box after the Ascot was left in the freezer for a few minutes.
Being so warm, these are excellent slippers for wintry days. The rubbery outsole and minimal cush built into the insole also help insulate the footbed and are just enough to handle bare floors, where chills can easily creep up.
Breathability and Moisture Management
Wool has natural wicking properties, pulling moisture away from your skin, and suede is naturally breathable while also being durable, both features of the Ugg Ascot. At rest, we found breathability and warmth retention in excellent balance, which is one reason we rated the Ascot so high in comfort as well.
The natural materials found in the Ascot do insist that you not get them severely wet. If there is a pasta-draining spill mishap in the kitchen or a sudden downpour you've gotten stuck in outside, refer to the manufacturer's instructions on how to properly handle restoring the suede upper to like-new condition.
Traction
With an outsole made of either rubber or a rubber-like TPE (slightly confusing — like the lining, it depends on the production run), the Ascot has plenty of stick for you to stay upright as you make the journey from bedroom to bathroom to couch, but not so much that the outsole takes away from the plushness of the rest of the slipper by adding too much rigidity. Instead, the outsole footprint is minimized to handle what's needed for indoor use.
There is a fairly intricate low-depth lug pattern to keep things rubber side down for both smooth and textured surfaces, either dry or wet. But because the upper wraps down and meets up with the outsole at the bottom of the Ascot, it doesn't seem to us like these slippers are really made to be worn outside at all, as the soft suede will make contact with the ground and could quickly succumb to the abrasion of harsh surfaces outdoors. We've kept ours inside, and they've stayed looking great.
Construction Quality
The UGG Ascot is a slipper that embodies the very idea of “quality”. We really love all the small details of the upper, including the additional suede panels that reinforce the collar, heel counter, and the bottom of the footbox. The moc toe design is simple and stately.
The undersized outsole design really lends itself to hiding out of the way and keeping up the illusion that there's not a rubbery outsole at all, but maybe instead one made of leather or suede. Overall, the slipper has held up gracefully over the years we've worn it, with no sign of premature wear besides a little packing down of the shearling.
Should You Buy the UGG Ascot?
For indoor duties, the UGG Ascot is a strong contender as one of the best moccasins out there, offering up exactly what we're looking for in a top-of-the-line luxury slipper. It's comfortable, it's warm, and it's durable for years of indoor use without falling apart. If going outside for more than a second is something you're in need of, seek a better solution, but for the great indoors, the Ascot may be the race winner.
What Other Men's Slippers Should You Consider?
The L.L.Bean Wicked Good Moccasins are another excellent moccasin slipper that features overflowing long-hair shearling, a soft suede upper, and beautiful details all over. If you need something much more walkable and just as luxe, turn your attention to the Olukai Moloa. If your funds are tight, but the need for comfy feet is paramount, look at the Zigzagger Moccasin.
