The Gash Hao Fleece Lined pants are made from a comfortable soft-shell fabric with warm and cozy fleece lining. The pants themselves feel great, and the articulated knees offer excellent range of motion. They might work well for activities like cross-country skiing on a bluebird day.
We appreciate the many size and color options. Unlike most ski pants, these winter pants come in more than 30 sizes, letting us choose the waist and inseam length. We have mixed feelings on their style. With the reinforced knee patches and articulated knees, they offer a mountain technical vibe that doesn't take itself too seriously. We must admit, they look a bit better in person than they do in photos. More casual than refined.
Because these are made from a soft-shell fabric, they are very breathable, allowing our legs to release moisture while hiking. For the rock-bottom price point, they're surprisingly good, but they can't compete with premium soft shell pants that cost twice as much or more.
Dislikes
When it came to ski-related fit and performance, the Gash Hao Fleece Lined pants were disappointing. The lower legs are freakishly narrow. They have side zippers to make it easier to pull them down over boots. We could get them over winter boots, but they would not cover our downhill ski boots. The ankle zippers would likely accommodate cross-country ski boots.
Simply put, the Gash Hao Fleece Lined pants are not good for downhill skiing, and we would not trust them for snowboarding either. When we considered weather protection, the pants are thick and warm, but they're incapable of shedding rain for more than a minute or so, and, based on our alarming shower test, we would not trust them far from the parking lot in inclement weather.
These pants do have a durable water repellent (DWR) coating to help them shed water, but during our shower test, they started leaking within the first minute.
The Gash Hao Fleece Lined pants do not have typical features we look for in downhill ski pants. The lowers don't have scuff guards to protect the fabric from sharp ski edges, and the lowers don't have gaiter cuffs that can seal out snow.
The fleece lining also makes it hard to wear these pants with wool base layers because of excess friction between the two layers. Overall, despite the marketing claims, these are not ski pants we can recommend for downhill skiing.
Should You Buy the Gash Hao Fleece Lined Pants?
If you're looking for a warm, budget-friendly winter pant for walking the dog, shoveling the driveway, or light hiking, these pants are a decent buy. They're not what we consider weatherproof, and they are certainly not waterproof. We can't recommend them as a downhill ski pant, but they are an affordable winter pant.
What Other Ski Pants Should You Consider?
If you're looking for a waterproof ski pant that's designed for downhill skiing, the REI Co-op Powderbound Insulated is packed with ski-ready features — and it has a budget-friendly price. If a low price is the most critical decision factor, the Arctix Essential Insulated Bib offers much better warmth and weather resistance than the Gash Hao option.
