Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
Patagonia released an update design for the Refugio in Feb 2026. The changes are significant from our point of view, and not a step in a positive direction. The removable and heavily padded laptop sleeve has been eliminated on the 26L model, and now offers less padding on the 30L size. The removable sleeve is a feature we loved because it made the Refugio uniquely able to be reconfigured from use with a laptop for work or school, to transform into a first-class hiking pack, by simply removing the sleeve. The front pocket is now much deeper, going all the way to the bottom, which makes the pocket less useful, in our opinion, and harder to access items if the main compartment is packed full. Load lifters at the top of the shoulder pads were removed, which makes this large capacity pack less ideal for carrying heavier loads, whether day hiking or commuting to work/school. On the positive side, it is a nice looking redesign, but unfortunately, it sacrifices many of the things we loved about the pack when we tested it for this review back in April 2024. We liked the older design much better.

We were incredibly impressed by the creative approach to laptop protection the Patagonia Refugio offers. Earning a very high 8.0 out of 10 for laptop protection, it utilizes a removable tech caddy that can house up to a 15-inch laptop. This velcro-topped sleeve provides a fantastic extra layer of padding and water resistance compared to standard models. It simply slides into a separate laptop compartment near the back panel and hooks to the top with a secure velcro tab.
We also love how versatile and spacious this 30-liter bag is. Because the tech caddy is completely removable, you can easily ditch your laptop-specific features for a lighter load when you reach your destination or when the weekend rolls around.
As one tester noted during our evaluations, “I loved how quickly I could pull the tech caddy out on a Friday afternoon, instantly transforming my work bag into a trail-ready daypack.”
Externally, the Refugio shines for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers alike. The exterior elastic bungee cord provides a perfect hands-free stash point for a jacket, fleece, or airplane blanket, which frees up valuable space inside the main compartment. It also features a sternum strap for load stability and two highly functional exterior water bottle holders.
Dislikes
While we love the open-space freedom of the Refugio, its lack of internal structure resulted in lower scores for Storage and Ease of Use. The bag features an open, single-compartment concept that allows you to store larger, bulky items however you would like. However, it provides nearly zero built-in internal organization for your smaller daily essentials. Aside from a few small pockets on one side of the removable tech caddy, you are largely left to rely on your own DIY organization pouches to keep pens, chargers, and small tech from falling to the bottom of the bag.
Additionally, the zippers on the Refugio have fairly narrow openings. This can make accessing the bottom of the spacious 30-liter compartment slightly frustrating, especially if the bag is fully loaded.
Finally, our test team noticed that the torso length is shorter than the manufacturer claims. If you are exceptionally tall or have a longer torso, you might find that this bag sits a bit high and awkward on your back.
Should You Buy the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L?
If you are an adventurous commuter who hates switching between a work briefcase and a weekend hiking backpack, the Patagonia Refugio 30L is absolutely worth your money. At a list price of $135, it offers great value for a bag that essentially performs two very different jobs well. It is incredibly lightweight at just 1.7 pounds, and the clever removable tech caddy ensures your expensive electronics are shielded from drops and light rain. However, if you are a highly organized “desk-drawer” type of packer who needs a dedicated slot for every pen, tablet, and charging cable, this open-concept bag will likely leave you frustrated.
What Other Laptop Backpacks Should You Consider?
If you love the outdoor-ready aesthetic of the Refugio but need better organization and a fit that accommodates longer torsos, we highly recommend The North Face Recon. It is our Best Buy award winner, costs slightly less at $125, holds the same 30-liter volume, and fits a larger 16-inch laptop. It also offers a much wider array of small compartments and pockets.
If you like the external bungee storage of the Refugio but want something slightly smaller, check out The North Face Borealis. It offers 28 liters of space, a similar outdoor vibe, and excellent water resistance.
Finally, if you don't plan on taking your laptop bag on the trail at all and simply want the best overall bag for the office or the airport, look to the Timbuk2 Authority Deluxe. It is our favorite overall laptop bag, offering incredible built-in tech organization, superior all-day comfort, and a sleek, professional style.
