How We Tested Leggings

By Kate Pitts ⋅ Review Editor

Finding a great pair of leggings means balancing comfort, performance, and durability across a wide range of activities. Over five months of testing, we evaluated every pair through hundreds of hours of hiking, running, strength training, yoga, HIIT workouts, and everyday wear. We incorporated repeatable movement assessments and long-term wear observations to compare how each model performed over time.

Comfort and Fit

Comfort and fit are the foundation of a great pair of leggings. To evaluate each model, we tested comfort, mobility, and fit security during both exercise and everyday wear.

Each pair was worn while walking, climbing stairs, squatting, lunging, stretching, and moving vigorously to assess flexibility and determine whether the fabric restricted movement at full range of motion. Throughout testing, we monitored waistband stability, noting any slipping, rolling, digging, chafing, or pressure points.

To evaluate comfort outside of workouts, we also wore each pair through prolonged intervals of sitting, standing, driving, traveling, and daily errands. This helped us identify which leggings remained comfortable throughout the day and which are too squeezy for snugs on the couch or a day running errands.

Comfort and fit scores were based on overall comfort, freedom of movement, waistband performance, the absence of pressure points or chafing, and each legging's ability to maintain a secure fit across both active and everyday use.

Breathability

Breathability plays a key role in comfort, particularly during warm weather and when giving your body love with heart-healthy cardio. We evaluated each pair during indoor cardio workouts, strength training, warm-weather hikes, and runs to compare how effectively the fabrics managed heat and moisture.

or snugs on the couch oThroughout testing, we assessed how quickly each material wicked sweat away from the skin, how efficiently it released heat, and whether moisture accumulated in high-perspiration areas such as the waistband, lower back, inner thighs, and behind the knees. We also observed how the fabric felt once damp, noting clinginess, drying speed, and overall comfort as workouts progressed. In our lab tests, we used an airflow meter to gauge the permeability of each fabric.

Breathability scores were based on moisture-wicking efficiency, drying speed, heat management, resistance to clinginess when wet, and overall comfort during sustained activity.

Compression and Support

Supportive leggings should provide consistent compression without restricting natural movement. We evaluated how well leggings stabilize down the leg -the waist, hips, thighs, and calves through different types of activity.

We paid close attention to how compression changed over time, noting whether fabrics maintained a secure, supportive feel or gradually loosened as body heat and movement increased. During higher-impact exercises such as burpees, jump squats, mountain climbers, and short sprints, we assessed muscle support, bounce control, and overall stability. Waistband performance was monitored throughout every stage of testing, noting whether it remained securely in place or required adjustment during movement.

Durability and Recovery

A high-quality pair of leggings should maintain its shape, coverage, and performance through repeated wear and washing. To evaluate long-term durability, we examined how each fabric and construction held up after months of regular use.

We performed deep squat tests under bright lighting to evaluate opacity at maximum stretch and monitored fabrics for stretching, bagging, pilling, abrasion, seam integrity, and overall shape retention throughout the testing period. After repeated workouts, we observed how well each pair recovered from movement-related stretching, paying particular attention to the knees, seat, and waistband.

Every legging was also washed repeatedly under consistent conditions to evaluate whether it retained its original fit, structure, compression, and overall appearance after multiple wash cycles. Durability and recovery scores were based on opacity, stretch recovery, resistance to wear, seam durability, shape retention, and long-term performance after repeated use and laundering.

Versatility

The most versatile leggings perform well across a wide variety of activities without feeling overly specialized. To evaluate versatility, we wore every pair during workouts, hikes, travel, errands, and extended everyday wear.

We assessed how naturally each model transitioned between exercise and daily life, considering comfort, appearance, drying speed after activity, and whether sweat remained visible during casual wear. We also evaluated practical features including pockets, waistband design, drawcords, reflective elements, seam placement, and overall fabric construction. Phone pockets were tested during walking, running, jumping, and sitting to determine how securely they held their contents.

Finally, we considered how each fabric's construction influenced its best use. Lightweight, slick materials typically excelled during running and high-output activities by minimizing friction and maximizing airflow, while softer brushed fabrics generally provided greater comfort for yoga, recovery, and everyday wear.

Versatility scores were based on all-day comfort, crossover performance between exercise and casual use, feature functionality, pocket security, and each legging's ability to perform well across a broad range of activities.

We love a legging that can transition from high activity to sweet relaxation.
