Brooke Maushund

Brooke, originally planning grad school after a summer in Yosemite, never left. Raised surfing and sailing the Pacific, she thrived climbing El Capitan and the High Sierra. With an off-grid solar engineering background from UC Berkeley—honed in Central America and Sub-Saharan Africa—she joined Yosemite’s Search and Rescue (YOSAR) after starting as a recycling attendant. Winters shifted from chasing snow to avalanches, evolving from ski patrolling, guiding, and educating to forecasting. Now an avalanche forecaster at the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center in Bishop, CA, she’s also worked at Idaho’s Sawtooth Avalanche Center, as a climbing ranger on Mt. Rainier, and in South America’s snow industry. She loves long days on the move, mate in hand, ending with a dog to pet at home.
