Ease of Transport

The Kryptonite Evolution Mini-7 features a streamlined frame mount that keeps the U-lock centered and secure, avoiding the annoying “shake and rattle” common in cheaper brackets. While the mount's inline positioning is a major ergonomic win compared to offset side-mounts, the system isn't a total “on-bike” solution since the companion cable still requires separate storage in a backpack or pannier. It is a functional, no-frills hardware set that performs its primary task well, though the bracket itself remains the same standard plastic-and-nylon design found across the Kryptonite lineup.

Weighing just 3.1 pounds, this lock can be carried in a back pocket or stashed in a bag. It's significantly lighter than many of the U-locks in our review, making it easy to carry. We found the frame mount to work well, but more often than not, we just tossed the lock in a backpack if we were using the cable, or stashed it in our pocket or on our belt if we were using it without the braided steel cable.

Ease of Use

The Kryptonite Evolution Mini stands out for its practical, real-world convenience, largely because the included cable removes the tedious chore of removing your front wheel. By using the U-lock for the frame and the cable for the wheel, the often-clunky “rack-wheel-frame” shuffle becomes simpler. The internal disc-style cylinder operates precisely and the sliding dust cover never felt like it was in the way, while keeping debris out of the lock cylinder.

The mini size is a double-edged sword: while it is exceptionally easy to carry, the limited internal clearance can turn locking your rear wheel and frame together into a complex puzzle. While standard bike racks are rarely an issue, you may find yourself hunting for a suitable spot when one isn't nearby or is full. Despite the occasional capacity limits, the lock is pretty awesome for cruising around town. It's so quick and easy to carry, stash, and go that we typically go without the cable and save the time and hassle.

Pull the trigger if you ride in low- to medium-risk areas and need a lock that won't bother you during 5–6 daily stops. If you're frequently locking up a mountain bike or often have no access to a standard bike rack, the small dimensions will probably feel more like a constraint than a convenience.
